Opinions are just that. Anything mechanical will break down, some sooner and some later.
As far as mileage, my own experience is that a truck that runs better, gets better mileage. Period. So if you get a good one, either by speccing, choosing a well equipped used one, and some luck, it would be better than an also ran.
I had the occasion to drive a 2014 Cascadia, condo when the 2013 midroof 216 inch WB truck was down for bodywork, for a month, and it got noticeably better mileage, had just a few more miles on it.
It had problems, worst of which was someone messed up the Evenflo so the tanks wouldn't empty evenly. It was much better in many ways, wish I had been able to get one of the 2018s they just got, but I couldn't, being in a loaner.
Still have the open fuel tanks, so it isn't all bad. -
I read recently, can’t remember the article, but that switching to autos was just one step closer in making trucks fully autonomous. I have always assumed it was because a lot of people can’t shift a manual well, but it would make sense too.

Well, I did go and look at the mechanics section, I found exactly 2 discussions about problems with auto's, but in the last month, I found 6 separate discussion on manuals with serious issues.

I just talked to my friend who drives the Volvo from hell, beautiful truck but problems galore.
The transmission was replaced after hauling it back to Des Moines from out east somewhere. It was still under warranty but it was not going to be honored. He should write a book, really.Toomanybikes Thanks this. -
Not to many O/O buying auto trans , and company drivers just call the shop , they don't really fix anything . That would be my guess , not many asking on here to fix them

Owner operator, going to keep the truck for more than 500,000 miles, buys manual, takes care of it -will last forever and can be worked on anywhere if needed.
Company driver, trade truck at 3 or 4 years or x mileage, buy the auto cuz driver doesn't care about it anyway or knows how to shift for efficiency for that matter; unlikely it will give problems, if it does the company gives the truck back to freightliner or whichever and says fix it or we may not renew lease again next time, so they give in.
Or are we going to continue trying to figure a way to beat this dead horse until the cows come homeshogun Thanks this. -
I was told the reason for the push to automatic is drivers are getting old, many past 65, the clutch is hard on their knees and keeps them driving.

The clutch is only for first gear and reverse.shogun Thanks this.
