MISINFORMATION. AutoSHITS are normal manuals contolled by servos. No torque converters. And the autos are no longer less efficeint at least by companies that have real engineers. They have just as many ratios if not more than the manuals. Welcome to the 2000's.
Trans-Am has a HUGE fleet of all autshifts and no problems at all. They are just as reliable. I think your mechanics may be the problem.
I had to back a trailer into a door for someone who had an autoshift...he couldn't stab it so I did. It was awkward like having jello between your shoulders and head. Seems you had to goose it a little to get the unit to move.
On our auto boxes in the UK the trucks have two drive and two reverse settings, you have your normal drive and reverse settings but both have a crawler type setting. Drive crawler for heavy traffic and tight manoeuvring and the reserve crawler for picking up trailers and putting it on a dock. It takes a feather lite touch on the throttle to get it right and it'll jerk around like a kangaroo on speed at first, but after a while you get it right and it can be quite smooth. Got to say Volvos have got a good one over here and the Dutch have it sorted with their DAF gearbox (it could well be the same box)
We don't have that in the autoshifts I have driven here, I have a 10 speed Meritor Smart Shift. I agree about the feather touch but sometimes we run into really hard pulling on soft surfaces or snow. It doesn't work very well.
Ive never rated the autos in poor conditions like snow or on the soft so give me a clutch any time, you cant beat knowing the sweet spot on the pedal is yours to control when your in a tight spot.
Sorry to tell you this but he more right than you think. How much does it cost to replace a 2nd generation or 3rd generation computer on a 13 speed manual transmission? Nothing because it doesn't have one unlike the Autoshift or Ultrashift which most of you are talking about. What happens if a wire, just one little wire comes backs out of the terminal on the connecter just enough to give it higher resistance? The computer on the transmission will go into limp home mode or give you a fault and it might even not let you put the truck into gear. All of this does not happen on a truck with a manual transmission. Clutch life, I have seen the fail premeturely on both Automated transmissions and manual transmissions. I will take a manual anyday over an automated trans, but if you don't like shifting then go with the automated. How about this, you could try the new type of transmission that eaton fuller is coming out with that is called an Ultrashift Plus. Nice driving transmission, no more jerkyness that you see with the Ultrashift.
