Back when the economy was humming along before the crash of '08 that was what most expected and any company driver worth his salt could easily do that at pretty much any company. When I got my license 12 years ago all of us rookies figured $1000 or better was good money and it was not an unrealistic goal. You look in the newbie forums nowadays and see guys talking about $850 a week being good money and that's the expectations they have as well. I don't think that's good money as a company driver but things are different now what they used to be. I do agree with you $600 a week is chump change that any experienced driver would pass on by to the next available job. But with the way things are anymore it seems like if a company driver can get $850 to $900 a week they're doing ok all things considered....

I hear you guys, but this gentleman talking bout home every weekend, not for a 34 hour restart either ! like getting home friday night and not leaving til monday morning weekend. and sounds like getting home several times through the week or almost every night ! I've been driving truck since 98. Maybe I've been doing something wrong, but I've always heard guys talk smack "I won't get in it unless I get over $1000/wk" but I ain't seen it on paper unless they're either living on the road, or on a real tight dedicated route, or they're running city freight to chicago in my area. If you guys got jobs getting home through the week and every weekend making $1000+/week post it up and let's see your W-2's

I have a friend doing gas tanker home daily and real 48 hr weekends pulling in $1200+ but you're right that is rare. A real company being upfront and honest with freight bills ought to be able to do it imo.

construction dump truck drivers get home every night and have holidays off. they work the hours but get paid the overtime also. saturdays are usually involved though.

tanker jobs also pay really good and are home every night. but shifts do vary depending on what type of work.

trash collectors is another example. and i don't think they work saturdays. but turnover seems to be high.

Ok gang I appreciate the replies and they are all great. Let's clear up a couple of things here. I am putting a person in a second truck whom I trust, know, and am confident of their ability to not only drive but to care well for my equipment. Second, I only drive Oh, Pa, In, WV, upstate New York, (Buffalo area). I can however go anywhere east of the Mississippi. That said, I generally am only out 1-2 days per week. Am usually home for dinner Friday and stay off until Monday morning unless I do have to go to Indiana in which case I choose to leave after dinner time on Sunday so I have a good nights rest.
I get a 34hr restart every weekend. I don't work any major holidays. I average $3200-$3500 gross per week and get 77%. You do the math but it's a decent living considering I only average approx 1200-2000 miles per week.
Now as a company driver for years I had to have a minimum of $800 per week take home and I was never home. The last company I drove for treated me well and I was home every weekend and made approx $600-$800 per week. Give.n the scenario I have now and to pay a driver, I would want it to be fair. I think by standards and the level of work required, 25% start and 3% raise after 90 days then again in 180 days. The potential to make approx $700-$1000 is great. In addition I may offer the option to haul a longer run on occasion with a small bonus incentive. I believe my potential driver likes the pay scale and the home time is definately attractive.

I would never think about anything less than 30%. I know o/o's that pay drivers up to 40%. I had a job hauling heavy single coils at 35% with an average gross of $4500/wk. And that was home every night and off weekends. I only left because the owner is one of the nastiest most crooked back stabbing scumbags in the steel industry.

I guess you would never drive for me then. My drivers are paid percentage and gross $2500 per week......but the percentage is less than 30%.
