To bad thatwith elogs now being required that it is not a federal offense for a company to request you make a run that would be illegal to run under prevailing conditions. Pass a Federal law requiring all dispatch load assignments be maintained for 120 days along with drivers HOS. In the case of an accident it would be very easy to detect a company that undermines the HOS by pressure applied upon drivers.

I don't work for Averitt but I do D&H at two of their terminals, twice a week. I have met a lot of their drivers over the past 10 months, and others opinions may vary, but from what I have seen they are one of the better companies to work for.

For your settlement break it down to mile, stops, per diem and what they owe you, if there is a difference they should make good on it.

As for your experiences they are not uncommon, years ago you didn't get a trainer, there were no GPSs, you pass your road test with the company, they have you the keys and a hearty "Go get Em". There is a normal break in period when you start with any new company. I recently transferred from a local shuttle job to long haul shuttles in the same company, and ran into a number of issues similar to yours just because I was not familiar with their operations.

So myself and a lot of other drivers out here may make a wrong turn and have to back out into a dark street or back up into an intersection because a low bridge sign was down, the difference is the veteran driver has the attitude, I have been through this (or similar)before, I will get through this. Don't sweat it get help when you can, I have used other truck drivers, utility workers, police and even passing pedestrians.

When you are sleep deprived everything seems worse, if I am in a bad mood or fretting about something the first question I ask is have I had enough sleep? Usually the answer is no.

If you have not had enough sleep explain it to your dispatcher. One of the most important things to learn is that you are responsible for the safe operation of that vehicle and it's contents. My truck rolls when I have enough sleep and when road conditions are safe. If I don't have enough sleep I let my dispatcher know and I pull over and take a nap. It's amazing what a 20-40 minute nap will do for you. As long as I have visibility and traction I will drive, otherwise I park it.

If my company can't live with that then they can take the appropriate action, but believe me, they want you to be safe,

You have young kids and are away from home and that is tough, but at least Averitt will normally get you home on the weekend. If you can survive a year you should be able to get a local job and be home every night.
I would recommend trying to stick it out. At least then you know you can did everything you can.

Most of all do the right thing and be safe, Good Luck

DDOC began this Thread, and he hasn't been back here in almost 4 months. So he is either doing something else and spending time with his family, or he crashed. Either way, he is ignoring the advice. I believe there are many people who post on here as a last resort, seeking some kind of support when they have reached a crisis. I would keep that in mind.
