We're in conflict at our company over legal gross weights & axle weights. We drive Freightliner Cascadia single axle tractors usually pulling 40-48ft Wabash trailers with tandem axles. The tandem sliding pins are welded in place, mainly because a former "super trucker" slid them too far & ripped the air lines off. Anyway, our logistics manager is very "green" so he called a NYSDOT officer, who responded that we were legal up to 80,000lbs. If that were to be true, we'd be capable of putting 34,000 over the front single axle, which CAN'T be right. We run 295 tires on the tractors & trailers. We've heard so many conflicting numbers from 54,900lbs up to the 80,000lb total. We don't normally carry anywhere near that much weight as we are a paper/food service supplier but during the winter we haul 2,500lb skids of ice melt & we also have a 2 day route that has a backhaul from NJ to upstate NY that involves full trailers of garbage bags or grocery bags that we're 99% sure are overweight for our setups. Any feedback as to DOT or MFG specs would be GREATLY APPRECIATED & HELPFUL!!! Thanks Smoke14TS

Pretty sure its 12k 20k 34k... 68k gross? That was a long time ago when i had to worry about that..sorry

Take him out and show him the label on the door of the truck that lists the gross weights for the axles. Then hand him a copy of the regs in writing. The DOT officer was/is an idiot. Of course your boss probably did not tell him that the tractors were single axles.

NY single axle 22,400 tandem 36,000, and figure 12,000 steer
NJ single axle 22,400 tandem 34,000, and figure 12,000 steer
You can do the math but just because the truck may be licensed for 80,000, you really can't gross that much on a single axle tractor setup
This info is from a 2014 motor carrier guide. Check the state's web site for current information (search "NY state axle weight limit" or something along those lines and you should find some official state web site listing the pertinent info)
Also, be aware, many smaller state roads in the northeast have reduced weight limitsSmoke14TS Thanks this. -
