Hi, I'm Darrell. I live in southwest Ga and until last week worked for ThermoKing Corp. I was only there 6 months. Turns out Hitler lives on as the manager there. Too old to deal with it. Before that I re-invented myself through 2 years of college in the HVAC field. I wanted to specialize and recieve training on reefers. The school dropped the class but I got my degree anyway. I also managed to strike up a relationship with aforementioned manager who hired me as a parts man. During my time there, I kind of fell in love with them big trucks man!! So funny, the disparity and level of satisfaction in this field I observed there is exactly what it is on this forum...lol. Anyways, I am a 53 year old single man living in south Ga. I am a cabinetmaker/designer by trade. There aint been no jobs in this field for a long, long time otherwise I'd have it. The ones that are hiring want young, impressionable folks who'll work for penny's and dont question anything they do. That aint me. I came back to Georgia after living in Kentucky for 23 years. My last wife insisted I get as far away from her as possible..lol. My folks are really getting on so I came back home to be near them in their golden years. Finding work and keeping work has been the stuff hit songs are made of. I know this cause I'm a songwriter. (Darrell Lee on Soundclick.com)..lol. I need steady work and I NEED get away from here as soon as I can. I have a theory that goes like this..If I aint paying $200-$300 power bills each month and all the other home owner expenses you incur while your actually, physically living there you might be able to get ahead by going mobile. So after 4 failed marriages and one dead son, I've decided to go into trucking. I am scheduled to attend my CDL training in March at South Ga Tech. Same school where I got my HVAC degree. Oh and by the way, starting pay as a heating and air tech down here is $9.00 to $10.00 dollars per hour. To make the real money in HVAC, ya gotta own it. To own it, ya gotta be in business for yourself which the state requires 4 documented years of experience in the field to recieve a contractors licensce in Ga. The school counts as one year. My ThermoKing stint, six months. If I could drive reefers, that might give me the additional time I need to get my contractors licensce in Ga. Dont really know how long I might end up driving. Then again I might stroke out at a truck stop and they can bury my cantankerous butt right there...ya never know..lol. I'm kinda up against the wall financially sort of and I kinda need to be own my own as much as possible and I kinda need to get out of here for a while on a recurring basis. I love the big trucks and I think I may like driving. After delving into a lot of responses and stories on this forum, it would appear that the business is good for some and not so good for others. I really think ya gotta love the "idea" of trucking and be a bit of a romanatic to a certain degree in order to deal with the downsides of the business. I am extremely drawn to the isolation element ( I realize you've gotta deal with dispatchers screamin' down your neck) of this profession. I aint no fool. But hell, I re-invented myself once before. I am certain I can do it again. So unless something really lucrative comes up in the cabinetry field or the refrigerated field between now and March...ya'll get ready for another disallusioned old man to give trucking a go !!! Glad to have found ya'll and God Bless You !!
Back against the wall..sort of

I can relate on a few levels...I was a single mom working 2 jobs trying to make a decent living. I went on a blind date with a truck driver..We took a short hop up North, he let me drive... I fell in love with trucking! (Not him) I have been driving for 14 years now..raised my kids and now waiting to see the next phase in my life!! Good Luck in your new career!!
