    A'yup.
Even doubly so nowadays when anywhere near a population center with those ignorant 4-wheelers that think zipping in front of you just to slam on the brakes won't ever adversely affect their self-absorbed world....

    True.

The other issue is the bounciness of spring ride equipment, compounded by a machine with rubber tires, which tends to wreak havoc on smaller chains.

Oh, I was agreeing with you on that.....The 4-wheelers are just the straw that broke Joe Camel's back....

I had one break on my first New York adventure with some antique version of a CAT 928. I stopped once along the Jersey Pike to retighten them before I went across the Goethals bridge.

The fun started once I crossed the Verrazano bridge, and saw that sign that says "all trucks taller than 12'1" must exit at Atlantic Ave". That was quite the experience for someone that's never been over that way before.

Then, about 5 minutes after getting off at exit 63 on the LIE, I see links go flying in the left mirror. What was left of that chain was nicely stretched to the point of nearly pinching the links closed. That's when I decided to use 1/2" chain for anything on wheels. :)

Actually For Tommy's boat a Florida annual permit for this is only $20. That is for five axles up to 12 wide and 80' long. Overweight is where they start getting expensive. I have annual permits from Fl to Louisiana and quarterly for Texas.
