Ah yes Gila Bend. Highway 85, probably a better road than most interstates.

Japanese Freightliner was a 7400, or as White called it, the 7000 series, like the one in my avitar, which was the first truck I bought in early 1976. It was a 1966 model.

I had a chance to drive a "Cracker Box Jimmy." once. It had the infamous 238 in it of course......and, for a couple of weeks got to drive a 190 International, with a 450 gas pulling a 45. The sleeper was a foot wide bed by the back window....45 was the length of the trailer, but as well, the average speed you could pull it....that is if the wind was not blowing...

Can't remember the nick name given to the Ford cabover.....

Monfort, rumor had it, paid their driver's speeding tickets. Also, it was said that the State of OH was going to ban their trucks if they did not slow them down. Shortly thereafter, they were gone for good.

Remember all the poor Big R Car jokes....There was so much good natured jesting on the radio back then. I had friends all over the place just from the CB....

Times have really changed. Like Monfort, I used to help my drivers with speeding tickets - but only if they were really good ones. LOL

I also had an understanding with my drivers:

You know that you're overweight when you leave here. If you pull onto a set of scales knowing that, you're on your own. However, if you get caught going around, or even running scales, I'll take care of it.

I've had to get drivers out of jail on several different occasions when they took me up on the scale-running offer.

I finally had to amend the agreement that I had with one driver:

The Childress scales are easy to get around. The next time you get caught trying to run those in broad open daylight just because you weren't paying attention at the turnoff, you're on your own. It's only a myth that you can go faster than the speed of vision. Just because you're going fast enough that it takes them 30 miles to catch you doesn't change this new agreement. :biggrin_25523:

No need to be sorry--we all told em--even when I drove for em back in the 70s--LMAO--course back then there were a few of the Big R line haul trucks that would surprise you--especially if a driver had a lil bit of mechanical knowledge--and a bag full of breakout bolts-----

I remember once going through the south bound! Florida AG check one morning about 3 am .
I had my buddy behind me in another truck for the same company.

When I stopped and the guy came out and looked I told him the guy behind me was a shady dude and he might want to look him over good .
As I pulled back out on 75 he hollered that the guy wanted to see his paperwork so he would be right back out .

I told him I would drag my feet and he could catch up to me .
I ran down to the rest area and hid until I seen him go by.
Then I pulled out behind him and chased him south .

I kept hollering where the hell are you I got to go !!!! Come on I can't drag my feet for ever ...
After about an hour of him doing as fast as that truck would run he hollered where are you I should have caught you by now .

I jumped out in the left lane and passed him . As I went by I said man you need to learn to look behind you I have been behind you the whole time !!!

He was so pissed off that he wouldn't talk to me for the next 50 miles LMAO !!! Man that boy was fun to run with !!!
