Not very encouraging... I'm guessing the fact that I have a two year medical card doesn't mean much. Guess I won't be going to school after all if my chances of getting hired are so slim.

we arent here to discourage you, however with this buisness you have to use your back. even if you get no-touch freight, you still have to bend to pull the fifth wheel or pull the handle to slide the tandems. any bending and stressing will put you at risk for back pain. This is why most companies are hesitant to hire with back injuries. sitting for extended periods is lousy for back problems.

I have three blown out discs, two of those the doctor wants to remove completely and fuse the vertebrae. Yes, I have back pain, and stiffness. this does not prevent me from doing my job. nor has it been a hindrance to being hired. If you are upfront with your potential employer, have medical documentation stating that that you can perform your duties, and are willing to go on, even through what pain you may, or may not experience, then by all means go for it. Whats the worst that could happen? they tell you thanks but no thanks? In that case go to the next company on your list. Just my .02 cents worth, take it as you will.

I'm not really worried about not being able to do the job. Just concerned with spending the money for school and then not being hired. Living in Florida, my choice of companies is pretty small.

Some trucking companies get very into making sure you won't make a workman's comp claim against them. I went to orientation for Knight and they actually took everyone to a chiropratic doctors office and when we were there we were each seen by five different doctors all doing different tests and exercises and stretches etc... We were there a good part of the day and I could not BELIEVE how extensive their wellness exam was!

So its all going to depend on who you go to. Unless they specifically ask this kind of info I wouldn't be forth coming with. If they do ask tell them without making a big deal about it. Most companies aren't going to want someone with back problems because its a claim waiting to happen.

Just keep it on the down low.

Unless you are wanting to be home everyday, your choice of companies to work for are not limited to Florida. Research, research, research...this forum is a great place to do all that reading! There are companies that will finance your schooling also. Good luck to you.
