I pull mine twice a year, just to be safe.
A lot of strange things appear on those reports !!!!! -
I also check my drivers license monthly.
It costs nothing to cover your butt !!! -
I recently got my report from HireRight.
It contains:
Employment History Information (also known as "DAC Report". Generally only applies to individuals with a CDL.)
Criminal Record Information
Drug and Alcohol Information
If you applied for a Retail Position or worked in retail it would also have:
Retail Theft database Information
I also obtained my "Driver Facts" report, which, if you've ever worked for a Swift Family Company, like, Swift, US EXpress, Knight, MS Carriers, Pegasus, etc., then you to will have a "Driver Facts" history... Driverfacts has these sections:
Employment History= Hire Date, Seperation Date, Sep. Status, Position Held
Drug/Alcohol Report
Accident History
Performance Summary (depending on wether or not the employer reports that info)
Driver Rebuttal NotesSheepDog Thanks this. -
BIG THANKS for all the good info and tips. I've done some thinking over today and I've also talked to the friend who rekindled the idea of getting a CDL. Right now I've got a start of a plan A and at least a concept for a plan B.
I'm OK with not being able to work for the heavy hitters in the industry. I know that pretty much any company willing to train is probably going to screen a little harder since they're already taking a risk by making an investment of time and money in someone. I'm willing to get training on my own. There's a community college within walking distance. I'll have to pay for it up front since I've got issues with student loans and can't qualify for any more assistance. I figure it's going to be between $800 and $1200. Right now I've got the money but the window of opportunity might not be there for long. I've got to come to a decision soon. Classes start next monday and there are still openings.
Felony 1 was drug related. Possession of marijuana.
Felony 2 was theft related. Larceny
I hadn't planned on entering Canada but I can see where it may be a concern. I'll do some more research on the subject.
Again, hazmat wasn't on my mind, but I guess it deserves some investigation as well. If I can qualify it might be a + which might give some balance to my situation.
Far as I know NCIC is just for law enforcement but background check companies have to get their data somewhere. I thought about getting one of the ones available online, but I've seen too many things in my life to trust the first one I see in a Google search. I would imagine the trucking companies have done their homework and found good sources for their information. I want to target that level of quality.
I'm not scared to contact law enforcement to get my NCIC. Actually, it sounds like a good first step. That way I've got a base line to judge by when I get one from one of the background check companies.
Thanks again, your post was well thought out and helpful. You even did a little research. That's effort that's appreciated.BigJohn54 Thanks this. -
Actually, that's a big part of plan A. My friend claims he knows someone who's got felonies that are much more recent and is working for a company that doesn't do a background check. I'm skeptical since I saw it mentioned that insurance companies are dictating some of the hiring practices but, I'm still hopeful.

You know, this is only my opinion and probably worth the price charged for it, but:
It would seem a shame to be at the point of overcoming past mistakes only to do it by making another. It would seem a fresh start would be much sweeter if it was clean.
Again - just my opinion. -
Another BIG THANKS for a well thought out and helpful post.
You nailed that one. He was a civilian working at Sandia National Labs. I live in Albuquerque and at the time I was taking classes at a community college that could have resulted in my being qualified to work in silicon manufacturing. That's one of the things they do at Sandia. I'm pretty sure that was why I mentioned my felony. I was looking for feedback on whether it would be possible to the get clearance.
Well, If I give plan A a shot that may blow it for plan B. That's why I'm asking questions. I hadn't considered the implications of not disclosing. Looks like DAC is going to be another research topic.
I applied around 8 or 9 years ago. Glad to hear that my memory on it was faulty. That simplifies things at least a little.
Not in NM. They have a very limited expungement law. There was a bill for a new law but it was vetoed by Bill Richardson. It would make NM more like some other States that allow people to erase their past after a number of years. It's not fair that people aren't allowed to change. Once a person is convicted of a felony people will judge them by it forever.
Thanks again, you've given me good info for me to build upon. -
I went to the Higher Right web site and filled out the form, and is this right, it takes 15 days to get the info that they have on me???
Thanks -
AGAIN, good info. Another BIG THANKS.
I did work for Wal-Mart a long time ago. Maybe, just maybe, there is a file on me already. Looks like I need to look a little deeper that I'd thought into HireRight.
