Because 10 is required.
3 for driving a CMV, and an additional 7 for driving a CDL required CMV.
Electronic Code of Federal Regulations (eCFR)truckdriver31 Thanks this. -
the fmcsa requires the 10 year history

How is the job application worded?
If you've had a CDL for the past 10 years, then, yes, you have to account for that time.
My understanding is, they go back 3 years for drivers that haven't had a CDL, but a trucking company can go back further if they want.Last edited: Nov 14, 2019
dwalto and truckdriver31 Thank this. -
I guess the language in the fmcsa book is confusing. If I understand right, you have to provide them with 10 year history but they’re only required to check back 3 years?
truckdriver31 Thanks this. -
i stay confused.

3 yrs. if you're a new cdl holder and applying for your first job.
10 yrs. for other cdl holders.
That's the minimum. Trucking companies can go 10 years for everyone if they want to or even further back.dwalto and truckdriver31 Thank this. -
I get what your saying but to stay compliant the carrier only has to check background and drug test info for potential drivers previous 3 years, regardless of how many years that driver has been driving with a cdl. It just seems silly that you’re required to provide 10 years of employment history if the employer is only required to check back 3 years.

The employer is required by federal law to go back 10 years for applicants that are not new cdl drivers.
@Ridgeline is a fleet owner and can answer this question better that I can. -
I've always heard 3 years. New or not.
Most of my former employers don't usually stick around 10 years.
You won't get a hold of my last company. ELD put him out of business. Running Cali and back.
The company I started OTR when the recession hit. FBI shut them down.
Another OTR company. Has new investors and couldn't find my info.
