Backing help

Practice makes perfect. You're essentially steering the trailer. Just go slow and get out and look as much as you need to. Watch the front end too, last thing you need to do is catch something with the front bumper or steer into a ditch by mistake.

 

What I do is "break" the trailer (for lack of a better term). Basically I just get an angle between the truck and trailer that will get me in the spot, then I start following the trailer by holding that angle consistent and making small adjustments to get the trailer to turn in a smooth arc. Nice and easy. If I have to go sharper and can't make the turn without a jackknife, I just pull ahead while I turn to get it straight.

Just practice, it'll get easier.

 

When you first go into trucking, you look at those big trucks and think “how did those truck drivers possibly back that thing into those tight spaces”. It’s literally probably the most terrifying aspect of trucking to a brand new driver. Some people get it faster than others. I never really struggled with backing per se. But I will say this, the other day being four years in now, I kind of am amazed at how good I’ve gotten at backing. I can put this truck pretty much anywhere I want it via backing with ease now, even challenging blind spot backing has become second nature. I’m not bragging, I’m just pointing out that practice makes you better and better at it. Until one day you realize it’s really no big deal.

The absolute number one main thing you need to worry about when it comes to backing, it’s don’t hit anything. If you don’t hit anything, you’ll keep getting better and better at it.

 

here is what you do. find a warehouse with about 50 doors, back into each one of them, then back into them BLIND SIDE. keep practicing is THE ONLY WAY to get good at it. Forget about the stupid language pull ups and all that goofy talk. Just keep backing up and PRACTICE,PRACTICE.

forget about wings and technique, just find a large warehouse and keep backing all day, you will get it. No magic wand or special technique or language will get you any better. PRACTICE.
