Backing up doubles

Wow....& I call myself a trucker. I got really good with a straight truck & pull trailer (gas tanker).

Good on 'ya.

 

Three pivot points can be backed up a pretty good distance, but like @pcfreak said PRACTICE!
3 "Bends" with Pintol hook set up, fairly easy once you get the feel for it.
You have to "anticipate" the trailer movement, if you wait to see it move it's to late

I was "King for a Day" once backing a set of 40/20's into the yard.
Friday afternoon, bunch of us putting our trailers away. I was still considered "The new guy", (5yrs).
2 guys backed their doubles in with a few pull up's.
Then "Jim", good guy but ####ey as heck, you know the type, back his in, key's the mike and says, "There Steve, 2 pull up's beat that!".
Now that's just mean but there's no choice.
Now you know the deal, other drivers stick around critiquing every one else's skill level, along with the shop guy's watching. No pressure here hahaha!! 10 times worse than any trkstp parking lot.
So I back mine in.
Now I'll admit I was sweatin blood and on top of that steering wheel.
I looked over and they were gathered around one guy's pickup truck watching, smiling with there arms crossed.
I keyed up the mike and said... "There Jim, NO pull up's, beat that!!!.
I could hear them belly laughing clear across the parking lot.
It's always better to be lucky then good. I got lucky.

You know, no matter how good a fellow becomes at something there's always going to be that one guy that will up the ante on you.

"You're doing okay with them there doubles, son, but I can back up triples. I do it all the time...except for right now because I'm in a hurry."

 

One of these days I like a full bore B train 140 ton or more. Might have to go to MI to get it.

 

I learned how to by accident. Map showed a through street.... nope, incomplete road. Had to back doubles 7 blocks in residential.... took a hour, pull up square, get a half block, pull up again and again... thats how i did it, 2 steps backwards, 1 step forward.... but from then on i wasn't scared of em...

 

When backing doubles the most important thing to watch it the trailer with the shortest tongue. That is usually the dolly. As soon as the dolly moves the slightest you must correct for it, but like all backing don't over correct. At the same time watch the rear trailer, you honestly don't have much control over where the rear trailer goes. A pot hole, a slop or even the crown in the road can redirect that rear trailer beyond correction, because you have little ability to steer it. I sometimes can compensate for where the rear trailer goes but I have yet to see anyone steer the rear trailer an A-train.

 

Watched a guy back in his rear pup in to a spot . Broke my set , put both into spots , went got fuel , then watched the last 20 mins or so of backing. I have backed out of fuel pumps , but usually less then the length of the truck/trailers.

 

IF your tounge is 10ft or longer then doubles are doable. Don't bother with triples. Any movement and there's no recovery.
