your right, that's the way most newbies think, brawn before brain, they think that just cause they are running allot of miles they are doing good, it works for a little while, but it will catch up to them.

they also tend to grab the loads at the offered price just so they can run, I cant say how many times I have let a load sit a day or two, and then booked it for twice the first offered price.

what i think is funny is guys out of houston,tx will take loads up to midland, odessa, and lubbock,tx for $2.50 a mile because they think it pays good but almost every time i have been out that way i had to dead head back into dallas/fort worth to get back on the freight hello people thats 300 miles your adding to your trip so your only making $1.62 a mile
$1,850 is the lowest i will go out that way...........

In other words, it's better to take a 1780-mile run @ $2.00/mile with 250-mile DH, than 2000-mile run at $1.10/mile with 30-mile DH. Same total miles, $1,360 more in gross revenue, less wear/tear and better overall mpg (shorter loaded miles).

I try to minimize DH, but given a choice between the two above, I'll take 1780 @ $2.00. It'd be even better if you can cover the DH with a $550 short haul, like revelation1911 suggested.

Personally, I don't mind sitting for a day or two. I've taken a OK load in a haste, only to see a better load going to a better area popping up on the load board a couple hours later. Opportunity cost can go either way, I found. It's a crap shoot, and I like occasional day time nap and time to catch up on paper work.

I mistyped I meant I made 1.56 a mile for every mile logged, deadhead and loaded.

17,000 miles a month seems to be a strech to me unless it's a team.
The truck would never cool down with that many miles a month.
I had a Rv hauler once told me he ran 250,000 miles in less than a year
    I laughed.
