The way it was explained to me was, student gets 50 hours behind the wheel the truck goes to team status, 240 hours behind the wheel you test out. I'm currently a week into the team driving part.

Sorry to hear about the way Swift is treating your husband. i just left Swift after nearly 7 years with them and I've seen the inner workings from a DM POV and I can tell you, it's went from bad to worse over last two years. About once every 6 or so months I received a call or message on QC about me becoming a Mentor since I have had so much experience with them. I kept telling them I wouldnt do it for $12 a mile, and still to this day I wouldn't.

The Metors used to get a $0.01 cent per mile bonus from the company to retain drivers like your husband, then came Richard Stocking and out went the add on to help keep a driver at Swift. You can train, btw, after just 3 months with the company, which I think is wrong. You shouldn't EVER train unless you have a min of two years OTR experience.

Well, now that the extra pay is out the window for the mentors, they are forced to run the students hard. Running as a team and hoping they pick up a good runner from the start to make up as much miles as they can before dumping the driver off at a terminal. I always told the people do it cause you want to help someone out, not for the money. Everyone is in it for the money, nothing else.

The Mentors I've encountered are usually O/Os and don't care about you as a person. They care about making their truck payment of $5-750 a week, nothing more. If that driver that comes on their truck can run, great, if not, they usually try to bully them. Sure, I've met some GREAT mentors, believe it or not. Guys who are awesome, and would bend over backwards for you, but others, I've locked horns with.

I've since left Swift for a better company and have been screwed out of my final check with them after being as dedicated to them as I was. I STRONGLY recommend your husband get his 3-6 months OTR experience in and head for higher ground via a better company. From all the people I've worked with who have left Swift before me, all was shafted some how or another. Including myself, and I never thought I would get the same treatment that the others did cause I was so loyal to this company.

Being loyal don't mean anything to Swift. I'm looking into other options to retreve my last check from them and will let you all know how I do. Til them, all I can say for your hubby is to finish out the training and get on with the solo runs, get the experience, be accident free and watch your DAC close, moreso after he leaves there, and look for a local job where he could be home daily. I've seen drivers get local gigs after only 3-6 months, so it can happen, just have to search around and do your homework and be patient... Good luck to you.

    Will

Golden, you can request a specific mentor but if they already have a student you'll have to wait. I'm not sure if you're male or female but either way you can request a mentor of the same gender that you are.

Also keep in mind that if you have ANY problem with the mentor you get you need to let driver services know at once. It does not count against you to tell them if your mentor has a problem. You do not have to put up with abuse.

I wish you well and if I can be of any further help please don't hesitate to ask.
