Well, people usually come in here for advice on a bad situation. Seldom to just say hi and what a great trainer I have.
I was one of the lucky ones with my mentor.
He had his quirks and it was a challenge sharing that little space with him, but we ended up being friends.
Not a slob or a pervert or an addict, but he was truly mentor minded in his devotion to training students well.
Most are not of his caliber.
It is not a job I could do nearly as well, and I like being alone with no one around me.tscottme, hope not dumb twucker, 201 and 2 others Thank this. -
Why was your trainer talking to your wife on the phone?

I talk to my dads wife all the time.Opus, Bean Jr. and hope not dumb twucker Thank this.

I wonder if some trainees have unrealistic expectations. For me, this was a purely transactional relationship. He had me on the truck because he got paid to do it (if he genuinely likes teaching, or feels it's part of his duty as an experienced driver to train others, that's great but not necessary). I was on his truck to learn the job. I needed to observe what he was doing, respectfully ask questions about what he's doing and why, and give my best effort. I didn't care if he's a bitter, foul-mouthed jerk, or likes to spout disgusting social or political views, or is a slob, or anything else. That's irrelevant. He had what I want - a successful driving career. So I can learn from him, and I #### well made sure I did. If you fail to benefit from time with an experienced driver, that's mostly on you. Sure' we'd all love to have a wise, inspiring mentor. But if that's not who you end up with, you still need to figure out a way to make it a productive experience.

Asking for advice I always thought, was the primary mission here. There are folks that just say "hi", great trainers, not so much. Their other thread got cancelled, but it should be noted again, a lot of people come into this business from other,,,less rowdy occupations, and aren't really ready for the clientele they may run into. The other post listed more problems, boobs didn't apply, but I cut my teeth with people like this trainer. Seasoned drivers that were loudmouth jerks, that thought they were special, and I suppose, they are. Many "trainers" are those very people. It's a job few want to do, incredibly frustrating, not unlike a drivers ed. teacher only with 100 times the liability.
I'm sorry, but if you want to get into this business "cold quarter", these are the hoops one must go through. Just the fact someone has to "learn" how to drive a truck, I feel, is a poor idea in the first place.tscottme Thanks this. -

Most newbies have unreasonable expectations. They do little or research, watch few YouTube videos, or expect a YT video to answer the same 4 questions TODAY or they claim the info just cannot be found. Many newbies are not hard-chargers "I'll find the answer myself" people. They may be people that failed at a fast food job.

Same here. My trainer was great. He actually liked doing it he said. Let him meet new people and have him purpose. 23 yes exp and still had a good attitude.very adamant about keeping the truck clean. We still talk and not just me asking questions just to shoot the ####. Helped fill in the blanks for me. I had experience backing with a trailer, just not this size or lack of visibility.Bean Jr. and Moosetek13 Thank this.

That thread was closed due to redundant threads. This one had more activity. If you want to quote a post from that thread, it's fine with me.
