Taking I-40 and US-54 might be 90 miles longer but factor in the amount of time it takes to cross the Rockies with a heavy load or to get stuck in Wyoming. It's better just to stay south in most cases. Maybe sometimes if the roads are bad on the southern route, I-15 to I-80 is the better choice assuming the conditions in Wyoming aren't horrible. You have to check the weather and the road conditions for different routes and make a judgement call.

I-10 to Florida then take a left..
Should be able to dodge the snowflake.IH Truck Guy, Speedy356, LtlAnonymous and 5 others Thank this. -
Are you measuring the distance from the shipper to the receiver via I-80 and I-40? Or from where you are parked BEFORE you go to the shipper?
-
From Bakersfield?!? It's basically the same miles running 80 or 40, the only routing that's shorter is to run 70.

Got years of paper state miles for a lot of trucks that say's different.drh72 Thanks this.

About the time he's just pulling out from the "chain-up" area on Donner and crawling along I-80 at 25 mph, and then doing it again over Parleys grade in Ut. and then dealing with Wy. He might wished he ran I-40, right ?
REO6205, Bean Jr. and LtlAnonymous Thank this. -
Well... He shouldn't be anywhere near Donner starting from Bakersfield. I don't get out that way anymore, but is the 53' trailer restriction still in place on the Provo shortcut that avoids Parley? Once that went up, I started running across 70 instead of having to deal with SLC and 80. It's the same time and fuel burn from Beaver to Big Springs whichever way you go (if the shortcut isn't an option,) although 70 is admittedly more work and USED to be more weather restrictive.
Of course living in the Dakotas when I ran that way meant I rarely even considered running 40, it took nasty weather to overrule a stop at the house.IH Truck Guy and Bean Jr. Thank this. -
If you're really heavy avoid 70 if you can. Looks like 15-80 is 50mi further. 40 is at least 100mi further. So depending on how tight appointments are up to you.
Abraxas Thanks this.
