I'm also a recent grad who finished up at North American Trade Schools back in August. I got 3 months under my belt driving LTL and looking for something that's strictly driving and limited touch. If anyone here has worked LTL, you know they mainly have drivers work the dock and you'll likely start as a night linehaul driver because city positions usually favor seniority. I'm curious if anyone has tried our Ryder or WW yet? I'd like a report or some feedback. I spoke to the recruiter at CT and she send me an application but I'm keeping my options open.

I know I am late, but I personally would bypass Ryder. If I had no other options, I would work there for a year or two and then get on with a no-touch grocer like giant food or you could check the DPW. They are always looking for drivers.

 

Update: I started with XPO in October 2018. Jessup, MD (XJP) and Baltimore (XBX) terminals are hiring for recent grads in the area. They hired me on but you have to start off on linehaul and drivers on that shift work the dock also. After spending the entire winter on a crossdock I was "over it" and moved to the truckload division at 6 month exp. They put me on a shuttle account and I spent much of next 3 months jockeying vans in the yard. I got antsy and left XPO at 9 mo's exp. and joined Schwerman Tankstar in July. They have a terminal in Frederick, MD under their subsidiary NABT. All the schwerman companies hire new grads. It's dry bulk pneumatic trailer work and you'll be moving cement from silos to plants. Easy work but they pay by the load (per ton) and you'll realistically get a max. 2 trips. no backhauls since its tanker work. you'll use up your whole clock. I'm thinking about doing LTL again in a few months because I'd rather get hourly + overtime if I'm burning my whole clock like that. local wages are pretty stagnant out here but I hear SAIA and ODFL and Ward pay top $$$ starting out and no forced dock work. I'll be a year exp. in Oct. and will be weighing my options.

 

You might consider Frock Brothers just over the Mason Dixon not too far from Hanover as the crow flies. There is a whole bunch of trucking because of UTZ and other food producing. Wonder if the old Apple houses are still going up there.

Probably be a easy job if you can get on dry wall there all pre load and tarp just gotta tighten the straps

 

Hauling cement would suck. I don’t blame you for wanting to leave especially since it’s paid by the load.

How’s the construction scene there? Ask around at the readymix plant maybe. You can make good money in construction plus it’s not boring as hell like working a dock or listening to that #### blower all day.
