Well when you get there the first thing you do is go for the physical so make sure you take your blood pressure pills if you need them.... Barr Nunn wont hire if you only get a 90 day card. I would suggest taking the band pay over the straight pay if they hire you at 45cents base. You will cap at 49cents base. I average 55cents per mile on the band pay on my run. If any lower take the flat rate of 50 cents (might be 51 cents now.) Make sure you have hazmat so you get the top rate you can. (I've only pulled 7 hazmat loads in 5 years) You won't average 2000 miles a week. It will be around 1850-2000, or about 93k-97k miles per year plus bonus, detention pay, stop pay (not too many multistop loads but a few). If you can make yourself available Sunday night for Monday delivery you increase your chance of making more miles per week. Barr Nunn does a great job with home time and equipment. They will be putting money in your 401k from day one into your account, so it builds faster here than at other places. The shop in Manchester PA is slow with repairs but they Fix everything you write up is my experience. They sometimes even catch stuff that you missed which shows they are really looking over the trucks when they are in. The shop guys there are also a good bunch of guys.
I think you will still have the option of going paperlogs or E-Logs. I would take paper logs because there is still a little wiggle room compared to E-Logs but not much. Our line 5 on the E-Log is only 30 minutes a day. The Trucks are 62 miles per hour and they have bunk heaters unless you get one of the old Columbia's. I think they are out of the fleet by now.... they are leasing the last few out if you want to go Lease Operator.
There is a lot of overnight freight so you will do better if you can work the Fed Ex overnight stuff without being late. All in all, if you look at the company as a whole, it's a good package. You won't make 57k your first year but you should be able to make at least 52k with CSA and other bonus' they have. That's being available Sunday 23:00- Friday 17:00. I don't know what other companies are paying so I don't know how that compares. I do know i'm not having to sit 11hours behind the wheel a day to earn my check lol.
Hope this helps.Last edited: Mar 10, 2013

For an OTR job, 50 to 55 cpm isn't bad even if you are running the northeast. Beats the 35 or 40 cpm junk.

I'm telling you, I fought the same battles you fought. I made it through the other end of when the economy was so bad that they let go all the drivers in upstate NY and had like 200 driver quit back in 08-09. We went from like 600 seated trucks to I think just under 400 back then. Now they are growing the fleet back slowly with newer equipment and better short hop freight. A lot of night work, but I don't know where else you can be home every weekend and earn a good check. If you find a job that i can match my pay and work only 4 days I'll be right behind you. I'm wearing out working almost 6 days a week lol. I'm sorry about your experience.
