Fixing things is a very handy skill , but I would suggest a bigger skill.

Learn to identify what is wrong first. I am by no means a mechanic or even very mechanically inclined but even I have learned to identify what a particular problem is.

This is very valuable. You should be able to tell the person you are calling for repairs etc. what is wrong. They usually have to bring parts and being able to tell them which to bring is a bonus.

Learn the names of the component on your truck and trailer at the very least.

Beyond that good suggestions here are those that really do not warrant a road or shop call but that can save your butt from a ticket or get you to the shop. Learning how to change lights and filters , learning how to back a brake off or splice a hose can really save your bacon.

Carry a hammer learn how to free up frozen brakes in the winter. Also know when you need antigel in your tanks.

What I am seeing out on the road leads me to this:

be able to do everything suggested so far,

be able to check air pressure in your tires,

be able to bleed all your air tanks, and

be able to install chains (either singles or duals) WITHOUT help.

Finally, understand how the engine works and the associated plumbing (exhaust side/intake side, turbo, boots, cooler, etc.) works and the direction of the air flow within this plumbing. Be able to replace blown boots...

KDRYAN, Its easy to adjust the brakes on trailer and tractor, but you need to be certified to adjust them.At least when in the presense of DOT

Great post guys! All of you have some really "key" points! Hopefully the new guys read through this thread. I especially like the comment on even if you are not mechanically inclined you should know the names of the parts and components to be able to communicate with dispatch or mobile road repair. Very good! I have been down that road many times and if you don't at the very least know what you are talking about it could cost you valuable time and money. For you guys thinking about reefer, make sure you really know that unit inside and out. If something goes array you will be a hero if you can save that load from getting hot!
