Truck ate a turbo bearing a few weeks back. New turbo installed by a local grease monkey.
It now has #### loads of power but stumbles and surges in gears 6+. Noticeably more when loaded.
Less noticeable when babied or driven like a #### race car. So mid rpms are the worst.
Stumble happens when rolling into the power, a quick 2-3 misfire feeling stumbles.
Surging happens when holding a steady mid rpm. Each surge accompanied with black smoke from the exhaust.
Here is what I've found so far.
#1 turbo actuator arm is not adjusted at all. Adjustment nut and jam nuts loose.
Can I adjust this close to where it should be?
#2. Air line to manifold broken. That line goes into a loom and down were it's broken again. (Red arrow)
Where should it go on the mystery end?
Did this go to a boost gauge, cause this rig dont have one.
Also in photo (green arrow) this wire not plugged into anything.

Pic #2 small black line is for ether (starting fluid) injection. Take fitting of intake and plug so it does not leak boost pressure. Don't worry about line, zip tie out of the way. #1 new turbo should have come with actuator pre-adjusted already. This explains your stumbling and surging. Laptop is needed to adjust properly. Thousands of an inch makes a big difference. Connector not plugged in could and probably means nothing. Will be plenty of those on any vehicle.
Oxbow and NormanNewb Thank this. -
Could the wire not connected be for the starting fluid injector? That is no longer there for now, I've reconnected the line and on the open end capped it off. I'll find a plug.
Thanks for the info on the turbo. It's got red paint on the adjuster and jamb nuts so I dont know why the installer F'd with it. -
One more thing. The sensor in the fuel filter housing is rotted off at the connector.
What is that sensor for?Attached Files:

It's for the heating element located in the fuel filter housing.
Oxbow and NormanNewb Thank this. -
Thank you qualitytruck.
Appointment made for Thursday to get it tuned.
The $6700 auction purchase is turning into a $10k truck quickly but it's not to shabby for a farm rig.Attached Files:

I did away with heated fuel filter set up years ago when I priced a new one just taped off plug replaced with Fleetguerd FS1000 filter common to Cummins. Works great and cheap price

this truck may need new vpod or turbo actuator adjustment.

Looks like intake air restriction fitting line goes into cab guage to show how dirty air filters are . They have small cheap manual gauge you screw in and just check when’s hoods open if you don’t have guage on dash.reset manually when new air filter installed. The plug looks like it’s running with battery cables maybe for fuel heater? If its powered with key on or off (always hot I would at least tape it off good
Oxbow Thanks this. -
