Well, I floored it yesterday and I hope I can avoid doing that in the future. Fuel mileage dropped like a brick down to 5.79. It was very windy in Tennessee and Kentucky and I'm sure that didn't help matters either, but 58-61 is the sweet spot for this truck. At the yard with a load to Columbus, Ohio, about 750 miles, that doesnt have to be there until Monday morning, so I'm taking the rest of the day off and goofing off here in town. Vape shop, Wal Mart...that kind of stuff. Tonight I'm going to Johnny's and having a big steak.

I got my first settlement sheet today and I'm digesting those numbers already looking for ways to run more efficiently. That said, I'm very pleased with the outcome especially considering I could have run two more loads in the time I sat due to the license problem and weather. I'll be sharing those soon, once I've finalized my metrics.

    More later...

    Ok. Numbers.

Fuel represented 26% of gross revenue, obviously the single largest expense.

48% Gross went to service various other categories i.e payment/ins etc.

    26% Profit.

Now on the surface these percentages aren't that impressive, but it was a short cycle for me, shortened further by setting on the yard for 4 needless days. That time represents 2 loads that, after fuel and maintenance escrow, would land squarely in the profit column.

Morehouse requires .07cpm maintenance escrow, I'm funding that at .12cpm to build the account up a little faster.

So what does it all mean? I made, in a short cycle, 44% more, after estimated taxes, than I made in a full average pay cycle as a company driver.

So, that's what it looks like out the gate. As I get more used to breaking down the numbers I'm sure I'll get a little better at presenting them.

Ahhh grasshoppa ....now you see my teachings of the high output of speed requires high input of fuel resulting in high output of cash .lol.
I love johnnys ! ....south o used to be full of places like that but the old Italians , bohemians and Germans are dying off or moving out to west 0 .
5 of those old steakhouses that have been around since the stockyards opened in the early 1900s have closed in the last 3 years ....

Good job, BD69. Remember though, one or two pay periods do not constitute a true average of anything in this business.

More like one or two years...

Quite so. My thinking was to post figures after each settlement so those wiser, and more experienced, could watch and point to things that I could improve on or point out data points it may not have occurred to me to track. I'm quite pleased with my first cycle, but I'm sure not under the illusion that there's any pattern to discern at this point.

I tinkered around with some of my numbers this morning. These 3 key data points stuck out to me for my first 2 years operating with my own authority starting in 2016:

    1. Gross revenue increased by 14.49% year over year
    2. Gross rate per mile increased by 20.72%
    3. My total all miles decreased in 2017 over 2016. Which means I'm working less for more.

My numbers going into 2018 are looking good as well.

My overall cost of operation remained steady throughout the 2 year period, with fuel & tires being the only variable that saw an increase year over year.

I was going to break all the numbers down to a year over year month by month comparison, but it just started getting too tedious and I needed a nap anyways ;-)

The reality is I proved to myself I could make it as an independent booking, billing & collecting for all of my own dry van loads off of the spot market running the I-5 corridor only.

That's with a new truck & trailer payment starting out in 2016.

My balance owing on my 2016 dry van is down to 15k dollars and the mid 70k dollar range on my 2016 Volvo.

I paid myself a reasonable salary with benefits through the S-Corp. Paid all of my taxes as I went. I also have roughly 30k dollars sitting in a recapitalization & maintenance account, which I add to every month.

My truck & trailer insurance is paid up through the end of 2018. My truck & trailer payments are covered through April.

I'm not getting rich by any stretch of the imagination. However, I'm content doing EXACTLY what I want to do and that's all that matters ultimately LOL.

Well, got to meet @Panhandle flash here in Omaha. We went out and grabbed a steak and were going to go out for a little while but i had to cut it short due to my schedule accelerating some. Real nice guy, wish we had a little more time to hang out.

Not alot else to say, getting all my last minute stuff done so I can take a nap before going out to make a truck payment.

I am so sick of wind I can't hardly see straight. Last year it was snow. This year it's wind. Always a dam cross wind. All the fuel penalty of a head wind with the addition of a safety issue. Blowing 35 gusting 50+ on 80 in Iowa today. Doing a quick 30 in Brooklyn on my way to fuel in Le Roy, Illinois.

    Man, I can relate.

I got up this morning at home, made myself a Starbucks Sumatra Coffee. While waiting for the coffee to finish brewing, the furnace heat kicked on and the 70 degree wind blowing out of the heat register almost blew me off of my feet!

I thought I'd never make it to the fridge to grab the half & half and cream cheese for my sourdough English muffin.

It was horrible I tell ya, just horrible!
