Yep, but now I've got THAT song???? running through my mind. I actually found myself humming it as I drove to town a few hours ago.

In the 1990s, my parents and I had a small airfreight and expedited freight company contracted with Emery Worldwide (the airline, before it went the way of Neanderthal man).

We had employees, but we also worked the operational side -- from marshaling to loading and unloading planes and trucks, to sorting freight, to maintaining our fleet: we learned the hard way from dump trucking that you can't afford to look away for a minute.

We were permanent in 17 states and temped in 6 or 8 others -- I've forgotten more places than I remember. Anyway, we tried to stay technologically up-to-date, but often either the necessary funds just weren't available or I'd get out-voted.

We were the first at the airport to have pagers, and the first to have cell phones; EWW appreciated this, but sometimes was a PITA when the guy at the terminal just wanted to talk or to get a position update every 10 to 20 minutes.

Anyway, one day, I dropped at a mall and had a couple of hours before I had to start my post-delivery pick-ups; in the mall was a tech store that had Delorme's software (either Street Atlas or TopoUSA , I've used both and don't recall the original packaging) bundled with a GPS antenna. It was ridiculously expensive, but I decided to put my own money into it.

Maintenance chores kept me from installing the software on my laptop that night, but I had a cigarette-lighter plug-in inverter, so I packed it all with me to the airport the next morning. The plane (a Douglas "Stretch-8") had been late leaving Dayton, and it lost even more time in Memphis. I started the install, and finished before the plane arrived.

Everybody on the dock laughed his buttoff when he heard of my plan, and again when they learned how much I had spent.

The next day, a guy called with a problem: he had been through 3 other airlines and nobody was able to pick up his freight; he'd tried shipping it early (it was a prototype and he wanted feedback before scaling-up his process) and had been told dozens of times that no one could find him. If he couldn't get it there in 2 days, he'd lose both the contract and his initial investment.

I was on my way to the airport when I got a call to pick up the freight if I could find it, but was admonished to not be late because the plane wouldn't wait. I had already passed the exit I needed to have taken, so I rerouted from the next exit. I had to do a little self-navigation to get far enough from the Interstate to make it stop trying to get me to go back that way (I hadn't had time to setup the software).

Eventually, it routed me through the woods along a trail seldom used by small farm tractors, and past the turnaround at the end of a field, and onto another road. I was certain that I was lost, but a good-sized store was maybe 200 feet away, and the software indicated that as my destination -- so I stopped to ask for directions. THAT actually was where I needed to be!

I made the pick-up and got to the airport with almost 15 minutes to spare! Nobody laughed at my GPS after that.

I've also seen them use farm tractors, or fork lifts to get them maneuvered into and out of tight places. Of they could have spotted it before the fence was built.

Tennis courts look pretty old when I was walking on them, looked like they hadn't been used in a while - fence look old also.
