The first time I saw a black bear I was about 4. We were camping in the Adirondacks and at that time (early 70s) camping was becoming popular among city people. So this official camping area had a ranger guy who mentions to my dad that people often liked bringing their kids over to such n such an area just after dark because that's when the bears come and go thru the trash the Rangers put there (mini landfill)
We all piled in the land cruiser and drove over. Parked pointing the headlights at the dump. Bears wandering around. Sad but cool. Then people start WALKING PAST US. On foot. Out of their cars. Posing the little kids in the middle of the road and taking pictures with bears in the background.
My dad rolled down his window and told them they need to get back in their cars but they looked at him like he was stupid. We left back to our campsite and never went back to the bear show.
So stupid they didn't even know what they didn't know.
Bears!!!! Wow...

Bears don't worry me too much. A lot of times if they know you're there they wander off, out of sight before you even know they were there.
I've encountered a few while out mountain biking. If they spot me they usually just stare for a minute and then wander off on their way. I've carried bear spray for years and never once had to pull it out.NavigatorWife Thanks this. -
I never had an experience like this thankfully.NavigatorWife and not4hire Thank this. -
"Resuming workout"
Now there's an understatement.

That summer was pretty bad for bears up there if I remember it right.
That same summer I was pulling an engine on a 650 excavator. According to the supervisor, one walked right past me while I had my head up inside the belly pan unhooking hoses. I climbed back on top of the hoe to start pulling the tin work off and the supervisor is running flat out across the yard blaring an air horn and yelling "BEAR!"
I'm looking around for the bear. Can't see nothing. A hear a quiet rustling sound and the silly bugger is inside the dumpster, like 4 feet away from the hoe I'm standing on.Last edited: Mar 26, 2021

My ex was a constant jokester. Took our kids on some primitive backpacking along the skyline drive in Virginia when they were 5 & 7. Went in about 4 miles from the road past a small set of waterfalls toward Camp Rapidian (def worth a visit!!!!)
There was a little black bear maybe 3ft long nose to tail. Sitting under a bush about 150ft from our trail. Watching us but not moving. My husband says to our youngest.. Hey. Alex. Guess what? Did you know bears are scared of donuts?
Alex at age 5 says really dad? Why?
Jim says I don't know. But they are. Really scared. Watch.
And Jim, 6ft4 240lb moron wearing a full external frame pack stands up tall and yells really loud "DONUTS" and the poor baby bear bolts off at a dead run.
And THAT is how my son was convinced for years that bears are afraid of donuts...NavigatorWife, mjd4277, Flint1 and 2 others Thank this. -
A lot of times I'd be by myself dropping shacks or other equipment or picking it up outside the confines of a camp or mine so had to keep a pretty watchful eye.
Unless our work was even remotely connected to Shell or Suncor (even though we weren't on their site), then we had to have spotters and horns and bear spray and...NavigatorWife and Flint1 Thank this. -
Yeah Suncor got pretty strict about bear safety after they had that worker get killed by a bear in camp.
Foxes were the ones I hated. Come out of a shack and they'd be nipping at your heels.NavigatorWife, not4hire and Flint1 Thank this. -
Foxes are unreal up there. We had 2 living in the autoshop yard at syncrude. They would run thru the shop on night shift. One got into the lunch shack, trashed it and pooped on table.
I used to arrive at camp late at night. Get out of the car and one would always be right there.
I tried to entice one into the main building to give security something to do. They just wouldn't walk thru the door.Last edited: Mar 27, 2021
