Thinking about switching careers, I work in a steel mill but the industry is drying up. How much can a low experience driver expect to make?

The problem is more like what slave wages are you willing to work at?
How about instead you post your location and @Chinatown will help you with the rest
CR England in 2007 only paid 250 a week starting pay. I am sure it has gone up since then
Western Express didnt pay me anything (market was imploding in 2008) for the time I worked for themPuppage Thanks this. -
You probably will gross 300 a week as a trainee. While your trainer sleeps, snores etc.
Are you sure you want out of that nice Payroll situation into something that is a step down for a while?
We always need steel. The problem is the importers or rather exporters flood our country with cheap steel that may or may not be inferior.Opendie Thanks this. -
As a new driver here is what you should expect to make in the first year after training:
Truckload Sector Dry Van ( Schneider, USA Truck, Werner) - $41,000 to to $50,000
LTL ( Less than Truckload ABF, Old Dominion, UPS Freight) - $52,000 to $55,000
Food Service Delivery (Sysco, Maines, PFG) - $55,000 to $58,000FlaSwampRat Thanks this. -
No ,I'm not sure I want out, but It might not be up to me. The trade I do has died. It would be nice to have a job I could do in any state

If you make $50K your first year you will be light years ahead of the pack. Your options in trucking are extremely limited until you have 1 year verifiable experience under your belt. Until then, you're basically dog meat.
You're not a low experienced driver, you're a no experienced driver. It's like any trade. Figure coming in green you'll make about half what a journeyman driver makes $60K or so. So my guess is you'd be between 30 and 40 thousand your first year.FlaSwampRat, lovesthedrive and Puppage Thank this. -
Where is your location? Maybe some high paying trucking jobs available.
If you smoke weed, better quit now, because you'll be tested.lovesthedrive Thanks this. -
