"According to the American Trucker Association, there are 3.5 million professional truck drivers in the US, and an additional 5.2 million people employed within the truck-driving industry who don’t drive the trucks. That’s 8.7 million trucking-related jobs."
    I wouldn't worry about it.

To the OP: This job is hard, I'm not going to sugar coat it. I'm running Refer but doing a crap ton of miles. I too am not young, I'm 55. Yes, you can make good money at your age but you must realize that it's a pain in the rear side and very hard on you, both physically and mentally. It is not easy. I hurt everyday when I crawl out of the cab after doing 650 to 700 miles. It all depends on you and your situation. If you don't have to go into OTR at 59, then I don't recommend it. If you have no choice, well then go get after it.. It is hard hard work to run OTR at an older age...but guess what? We are the ones that most companies want to hire. Good Luck to you Driver!

Living in a truck with no running water or toilet... no where to park.... truckstops are worse than hell (IMO).....lots of donating countless hours of your time. I don’t know how any self respecting person would want that.
Me? I’m an independent that runs regional. I sleep in the truck 2 nights a week. I’d hang the keys up if I had to do it any other way.

It's a great job; don't give it a second thought. Sure, not everyone is suited for OTR, but many of us are and wouldn't do it any other way.

I absolutely love driving. I always have. And driving cross country would be a dream. Having said that, I understand there are difficult situations that would most likely cause me to complain. I'm a complainer. lol Having said that, my main motivation is getting back to work. I don't have to work. The spouse makes enough money for both of us to live in. But I want to work. And I want to get out of the house and, to be honest, away from the spouse... I'm not sure were we are going together in the future. I know that's not enough to decide to do OTR.

I appreciate your candor. I could see how these issues are a drag.

They're only a drag to some drivers. There's a niche for all the drivers; just have to find it.
Some drivers would never consider the type trucking I prefer and that's pulling reefers coast to coast. Love the night driving, solitude, thermos of hot coffee and XM radio, turn the dash lights on dim, and run for hours. Sleep mostly during the day, then when most trucks are fighting for a parking spot, I'm leaving the truck stop, ready to do some serious night driving.

Ah, a "hobby trucker", that's different. It's not as bad as dirthaller says, it's just times are different today, and you have to be more diligent than ever. If dirthaller thinks this is bad, with the modern truckstops and rolling apartment trucks, and all, they obviously weren't trucking 30 years ago. Things were a LOT different back then, and you "showered" in the janitors sink and slept in a "coffin", if you were lucky. If you are going to do this, my best advice is get a forward facing dash cam. It will literally save your butt..
