Greetings all. Brand new here.
I'm 38 years old and I'm looking for a career change. I'm interested in trucking. I've already nailed down a CDL school to prevent owing a company any obligated service term.
My question for you all is, what should I expect for CPM as a brand-new driver out of CDL school?
Next, what are some good companies to get started with? The school I'm looking to attend has job placement assistance but they're mostly megas, none of which are located near me. I've also looked into the smaller companies which are either really far away or require 6-24 months experience.
Any recommendations from your experiences are appreciated.

Need your city and state and what preferences you want. CPM is just part of the story with pay. I can pay you $15 per mile and starve you by giving you no miles.
Use the search function in the upper right corner. There is local work (food & beverage delivery, dump truck, cement), home daily, home every "weekend" and OTR. Without details it's hard to help you. It's like someone asking what should I eat, then giving them 5 restaurants, and ONLY THEN hearing, "I'm gluten-free, organic only, vegetarian, and can't eat anything that moved by railroad."
What endorsements/restrictions do you have on your license, is your driving/criminal record clean, have you used drugs? Can you pass a drug screen that will find anything you used in the last 6 months?silverspur, Another Canadian driver, RiggerWings and 2 others Thank this. -
Where are you located in South Georgia?
Don't pay much attention to CPM. Accessorial pays are as important as CPM.

You don't have to live near a terminal or even in the same state as a terminal if you have a place to park the truck when on hometime.

@RiggerWings --
Greetings!
Schneider veteran here.
My latest gig has been hauling fuel (hazmat tanker)--but NOT with Schneider.
I also live now in south Ga.
What city in south Ga are you nearest? Albany? Valdosta? Tifton? Waycross? Dublin?
If you let the Forum know what city is closest--we can make MUCH BETTER suggestions/recommendations for you....
To answer your initial query--it depends on what carrier you go with, the type of freight you're carrying, what endorsements you also have (hazmat pays more), the location of the load, supply vs demand of trucks....get the picture?
Basically, as a starting driver--look for something between 45 & 55 cents per mile. That range is probably a good start.
Avoid Schneider. Their pay is some of the consistently lowest in the industry.

I’m going to offer my two cents here and see that the research I have done with most companies, they will pay you right around $.50 a mile to $.60 a mile to start out and offer bonuses. There’s a lot of companies out there that will hire in Georgia.
Davis hires out of certain schools. One company might want to look at is DOT foods.MiRookie, Another Canadian driver and RiggerWings Thank this. -
