That decision is yours and your family's decision. If you have read some of the threads on here you know that chances are if you are OTR you will be gone week and maybe a month or longer at a time with a few days home. You will most likely miss holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, etc. Your family has to understand and be on board with this as driving OTR (to not sound trite) is not a job, it really is a life style. You will live and eat and breath in the cab of your truck. You will sleep there and entertain youself there and at times, wash up in there! Your closet (cab of the truck) is your home. Today at least there are many options to staying in touch with your family with internet, cellphones, skype, Facebook to name a few.
My best advice is to talk with your family. Have your wife read some of the threads on here so she knows what she is getting into also (Lot's of advice in the Ladies room)
Also have you looked at any local jobs for class B type jobs ie garbage man, straight trucks, construction?
Good luck.

You know, you only go around once....I'm looking forward to this a lot. My eyes are wide open...I think. I start class in just 4 days. Should I be applying for driving jobs now? Or wait til I've got my permit? They say I'm in class for 10 days....then another 70 or 80 hours behind the wheel.

Hello Everyone.
I'm finally on home time after almost 6 weeks on the road. I found it very strange to be behind the wheel of a car again. You become acclimated to driving a truck very quickly. Driving anything else, after being on the road for that long, takes a little get used to.
It's great to see the family and friends again. Even though I call home regularly, it's nice to be here and catch up on what I've been missing.
On the technical front, I tried out my new power cord for the lap top and works (yes!). It looks like I can go back to being more active on the forum.
So far, I'm don't regret my decision to drive OTR trucks. I'm learning constantly, and understand more about how the system works at USX, and it's become much easier to apply that knowledge to the tasks I perform each day. Also, my driving skills are improving rapidly. I find I'm not concerned about what type of backing will be required. I just get it done, trying my best to be as professional as possible.
Just wanted to check in tonight and give you the report on the power cord (Yahoo!!!).
Thanks for reading.

How do you keep your laptop charged in a truck?
-
insert power cord into outlet........
But seriously you can get a 12v power cord for the cig lighter
or
get a power inverter and use your regular power cord

Wedge and all I am just about half way thru my classroom time at truckers school. I can't believe how much I like it. I think I'm taking my permit test tomorrow. Another week of classroom...then 80 hours of driving...then road test...then hopefully training at my new job. I'll be really glad when I finally have my own truck. Thanks for all the insight and encouragement.
