See to me the red straps are a "belly" wrap, that's how I do it. I cant see where the would not count for weight.

I would see the red as a choke, a belly being between layers,

I guess I have always used these as what is what.

Gut strap. From one side of trailer to the other on or between layer

Belly wrap. From one side of trailer, around cargo and back over to the other side of trailer.

Choke strap. Only around cargo. Sort of like banding.

    KenworthGuyNH and johndeere4020 Thank this.

I'm carrying my first load of pipe as I write. Because my training was so, um, let's call it "good," I went to YouTube to see if some old hand had done a video. Turns out, I was in luck.

He lays the strap on the deck side opposite the winch, and after doing the DOT wrap, pushes it through to the other side, then up and over the stack, down into the winch and tightens it down. Underneath, you'll see straps pulling toward the center of the trailer in opposite directions and the top strap pulls down.

As far as how many, our company uses this formula:

    WLL / 2 ( ex, my load: 42,000/2 = 21,000
    That number / 5 (21,000/5 = 4.2; round UP to 5 straps)
Add one strap for the company
Add one strap for your family

So, my load should have 7 straps, but because I'm a scared newbie in the flatbed world -- and because once I got the hang of it, repeating it was fun and got easier -- it has 10 straps on it. It ain't goin' anywhere except the receiver!

is it just me, or does that pic above show space between bundles?

the kind of load you'd want a bulkhead in front.

There was vertical blocking in the spaces.
