Sorry Mike I've not been here as often as I have in the past.... If you're asking about my current radio collection, I just have a Yaesu FT2800 as a base, an FT7900 as my mobile and I'm going to add a Magnum 257 HP to my base collection as well. When I upgrade to General this year, I'll probably look into a starter HF rig such as the one I posted "cute" about. Either that or a guy I know has a Kenwood TS50 for $375 that I might pick up.
I'll confess I don't know much about real ham radios....yet. My good friend, an "extra class", had checked this Icom out and knew it was a good radio and recommended I buy it. It will do about everything, including 11 meters. (it's my new CB Bruce!!! lol) I kind of got the cart before the horse here as I don't even have a CB base station anymore, much less any kind of ham set up....or license! Oh well, I'm gaining a little at a time.
With the exception of the older pre 1959 ham radios (back before 11 meter CB service, when 11 meters was still a ham band), I don't know of any of the newer ham radios that will let you transmit on 11 meters plus all the other HF frequencies. However I do know that some of the Yaesus will let you monitor 11 meters.....if you desire. You might be able to mod said radio for 11 meter transmissions, but I don't know. FWIW both of my Yaesus are 2 meter (144 MHz) radios, another one of them is a 70 cm (440 MHz) radio.
Mike was talking about the crystal filter mod. Any idiot can do the diode and have a poor radio on 11M AM.
I couldn't remember the term, but I knew it was converted correctly and wasn't something as simple as clipping a diode. FWIW, I pride myself on good sounding/performing radios. I do use echo, but very little, just enough to give it that little extra. None of mine have any swing mods or wack pack crap, no volted finals, no "super duper" anything except a super duper professional tune and alignment. The radios do all they can do and are not over-tuned where they run hot and break prematurely. If I remember correctly the limiters are clipped on the radios with mic gains.....I am the limiter! "If guns kill people, then cars drive drunk!" May I add; And spoons made Rosie O'Donnell fat!
