Another vote for the 980 SSB. Got one modded by Tim at Snake Radio Customs and I love it. I don't need 600 watts so with the weather and SSB it's a complete package to me.Had an opportunity to buy
A Galaxy 95 from a co-worker who was retiring, but passed on it in favor of the Uniden.

Maybe not with some of the crap that's being peddled for the CB bands, but it is with a good radio. I've been in 30+ minute "ragchews" on SSB, and didn't have to touch the radio the whole time.

That's an Icom IC-7000. Unfortunately, recently discontinued.

There is also the trucker favorite (and discontinued) ICOM 706 MK II G. Used price $475-$700.... You will want Inrad filters already installed or plan to install. Just google/yahoo search the model for photo. I use a Yaesu 857D - Lil Tarheel Antenna and the Kenwood 480HX- HiQ 4/160 MC RT II Antenna.
    and aimhigh!

I happen to be a fan of the older 142's and 148's. change a couple of diodes, change the audio and rf transistors and they become very clean clear radios. I also have an old 1011c, had to add a oven to the crystal bank to stabilize it great radio been using it since 1979, but I also have a 6 element quad over my house, most anything you plug n works fairly well. I also like my Johnson Viking Ranger w/ a vfo. I really like tubes, a warmer sound than solid state.

Im personally nota Uniden n, just don't care for them, I do not think there bad just preference.
