yea i currently have a center load k40 trucker that handles up to 3500 watts and i cant get the swr tuned down to do the final adjustments i have been working on it for months now and i have done every ground check that i can find and everything says that i am good to go but no matter what it is staying above 3 and i am tired of it and i was just gonna go with a magnet mount wilson cause i know that they are good antennas. i was just trying to get an opinion of what would be a good one for a stock cobra 29 nw wx that in the future i will turn up

This, right here, causes me to lose all confidence in anything this guy says. I can design a 6" antenna that is "tuned" to Channel 19, but it will have a range of a quarter mile, if I'm lucky. Conversely, a 102" whip will give the same radio a range of several miles.

There is a direct relationship between antenna length and efficiency.

I'm curious what he did to "fine tune" the radio, and what kind of noise filters he installed. I can reduce static on my radio to zero by turning down the RF Gain control. Unfortunately, that also seriously reduces my receiving range.

Also, if anyone touches anything inside the radio, it's no longer "stock".

    BTShepp Thanks this.

He kept rambling on about how factory line is always in a rush to really fine tune the radios, and the filters are not factory because they would drive the price up to another $100, its what he charged to upgrade it. I can now turn up the RF gain almost full on, and the static was just about nothing, while voices came in clear. He tested before to show me the difference, and it was really noticeable. After fine tuning the radio with this equipment, all he did was install noise filters.

As for the antennas, I wanted a dual setup, but he stated, "dollar for dollar" with a stock setup a single antenna of any kind would be the same as with an expensive antennas.

Stated, Wilson's are now made in China, so your just paying for the name brand, guaranteed a fire stik or his proprietary antenna to work just as good, once it was fined tuned. I also really wanted a 4 footer or longer, but clearance would be a problem for me. He said I wouldn't be able to notice the difference.

So I took his advice and saved some cash

Dual 2 or 3 foot firestik FS II. They are tough, don't whip around bad, have a tunable tip, and hold together good.
