You can hear skip on AM alot of the times. When your squelch is down and you hear people talking way far off is when you can tell skip is rolling. Channel 28 and 6 as well are some channels to go talk skip as well.

It happens when the atmosphere allows transmissions to travel longer distances than usual

 

When conditions are right they say, skip is rolling.
All this means is your signal reflect off one of the
layers of the atmosphere and comes back to earth
many miles away.
