    CAT w/ prefixes:

    1 - 6NZ, MBN (single turbo)
2 - NXS, BXS, MXS (twin turbo)

    Cummins:

    1 - N14 (redtop)
    2 - Pre-emissions ISX

    Detroit:

    1 - Series 60

Anyone else can feel free to add to this list. These are the only most recent motors I know that are highly desirable and reliable. Absolute best are 6NZ CAT and N14 Cummins.

Those Mercedes engines are absolutely irritating to listen to as they go by.

I'd be more embarrassed to admit one was passing you......

Jokes aside they are gutless with 0 engine brake functionality but from what I've seen you can't kill them. I worked for a company that had a handful of Columbias left, all around the 1.5 mil mark and never had the motors opened up unless you count replacing an injector or 2

Well, there isn't much you can do about one going by on a cross street while stopped at a red light. ;)

Specifically, the old 500 Detroit. Not the 430 and 470. 500 only. Why?

Inexpensive to build, good fuel economy, strong performer. Everything you could want in an engine.

I'm using a pre emissions Series 60 right now and its great.
It has an unmistakeable deep freight train sound when its working and the turbo hits hard and fast. It's much better than the DD15.
But my DD15's went down the road just fine as well.
99% of the Gliders have reman Series 60 in them. There's a reason for that, aside from the fact they made so many.

So your asserting there is more than one kind of pick up truck?
    WTF planet are you from?

I've heard from more than a few people the Fitzgerald reman Series 60s aren't fairing so well when they get some mileage on them...
