I was homeless with a 503 FICO. Now I’ve got a house, car, I’m debt free and have a credit score in the 740s. Just over a year and a half in. My problem has always been a lack of a decent income. Not that I was stupid or didn’t know how to manage money. Though one could argue that having a credit score at all would indicate that a person was an idiot. The only reason I have one now is that I brought everything current. Within the next few years my goal is to have so little information that I have no credit at all. All a good credit score truly indicates is that not only am I stupid, but I’ve been stupid for a long time and I have a history of being consistently stupid. Perpetual debt is mandatory to have a good credit score. My next purchase will be a truck that I pay cash for, a trailer that I pay cash for... my new car I paid cash for.

I always tell my wife that cash trumps credit. The credit is only good for obtaining, not buying, big ticket items that people don't really have the money for.

I’ll do you one better... I’ll give you directions to the abandoned building(an old abandoned high school football ticket booth) that I lived in next to the Corsicana Walmart. Therein, you will still find a few things from my stay there. The books that I made a bed from by stacking them up and covering them with sheets of cardboard boxes... there’s also still a bed sheet, a pillow and the old suitcase that I lived out of. That story is too embarrassing to be a lie.

Hey, did you and @Frank Speak grow up together or something? Go to the same school? Suck the blood out of the same cheerleader?

    :)

Don't be embarrassed. Savor that memory. Most folks would be terrified to go through what you have done. You not only survived, you thrived.

    Again, kudos.
