I use Google maps on my iPhone and compare the routing with an atlas. Sometimes I'll use Google Earth. Hasn't steered me wrong in 7 years. Honestly the $400+ truck GPS's are a waste of money.

Until you need to find that warehouse out in the middle of nowhere, and you don't have any cell signal.

Or you're rolling down the highway at 50 MPH and the exit you need to use is closed due to construction/accident/whatever, and you have no place to pull over to check your phone.

Once you've used a decent GPS (and I *don't* mean the Navigation function of the Qualcomm), you won't think that they are a waste of money.

I plug my whole trip plan from start to finish in my GPS, fuel stops, break points the works, then it becomes a navigation system just keeping me on track. I have ETA, Distance remaining, etc all at my fingertips, if the weather turns south, and I need to find a place to hole up, truck stops and rest areas in route are at my fingertips, if traffic jams up, It reroutes me around it... Lots of advantages to having a GPS.

As I stated in the beginning of this post... I plug in my trip plan, I don't blindly follow it.

That is the key, it is another great tool, but all your tools should be used, Atlas, Cell Phone, GzpS etc.

Defiantly not the Tom Tom I have built in to my Land Rover.
I stick a Garmin to the windscreen as that on-board navigation abomination will drive you to drink.

No, it will not upload directly from MS Streets and Trips.

Rand has their own web site that you can plan a trip on and upload it to the device if you want at http://tripmaker.randmcnally.com/ but I usually just set the destination in, let it plan the route, and then make any modifications I want to it as needed.

I am guessing that you guys (gals) using any of the GPS/Google map/etc. along with the paper truck map are OTR trucking.

What do the LTL guys (gals) use that does P&D? You can only use the paper truck map for so much like on major roads but when you get off the beaten path like intercity/town roads what do you use?
Would say the Rand 730 do that job along with say Google maps and a good set of eyes for low bridges & tree limbs etc. work?

Maybe I need to post this over in the LTL area?

    Thanks

I should say I have MS S&T 2010 and use it for pre tripping my vacations and some of them pulling a car trailer.
I did down load the truck add in to MS S&T but have not played with it yet.
Never had MS S&T running when moving and only just started using A Tom Tom GPS but still pre trip using S&T 2010 for vacations.
    Thanks
