BEST Mobile Internet Provider?

I switched to T-Mobile several months ago. I pay $30/month for unlimited. I have 3G of 4G and then they cut the speed down to 3G, but it is unlimited. It is a prepaid, but my bill is half that of Sprint. Service is just as good. With Sprint the speed was always 3G. So, my internet is faster with T-Mobile and I am paying half of what I was paying with Sprint. Most of the new smart phones also have unlimited internet access. I have a couple of friends who no longer take their laptop with them on the road since they got a smartphone. I think some of the smartphones can be used to access the internet with your computer.

 

Streaming movies is about 1 GB per hour. HD movies are about 1.5 GB per hour. Most streaming services will work at 1 MB/s speed, so most any service will provide buffer free movies. Best to download movies when at home from your home internet connection and only watch new releases on the phone service internet.

 

FYI, my wife and I live in a 40 foot greyhound coach fulltime. We use verizon, and it's excellent....but expensive. We pay nearly $300 a month for two phones and 12 gig of internet

 

You could always look into hughes net. They are satellite based. Or check out the annual Wi-Fi plans at the truck stops. For what some of these drives pay each month, you could have an annual plan at each truck stop for about 2 months worth of there bills. Loves, TA, and pilot flying j all offer plans of $200/year. $600 gets covered for the year compared to $300/month. I don't know how much Hughes net costs, but I know you'll have speed close to your home internet connection

 

How is that even an option.
I've used TS Wifi (Wandering Wifi) maybe 3 times.
My experience was so bad I wouldn't use it again if it was free.

 

The Wi-Fi at truck stops or Hughes net? Just throwing ideas out there. I know a few online gamers that use the truck stop Wi-Fi option with no issues. I'll use it stream video and seem to have no problems.

 

Have you actually looked at the cost of Hughes net? $130 for 20GB (plus an extra 20gb between 2am-8am.) Lets take the extra 20GB out since you'd likely be asleep. Since you're going to need to have a cellphone anyway (Unless you are one of the fews that don't). $200 from verizon you can have both a tablet and a cellphone with 20GB of data plus you don't have to worry about a dish which needs to be have a lot better signal then in satellite TV.

So in my books due to the more annoying part of this setup makes it not an overly valid solution compared to cellphone based internet.

 

Dude, it was just an idea. No I have not looked at the cost of Hughes net. I didn't realize it was that much.

Personally I use Sprint with there unlimited data and my phone as a hotspot and only pay $71/month after taxes and fees.

Only place I have issues with data coverage is in the Dakotas. But let's be honest, there isn't much up there to begin with.

The op asked for ideas, I was offering something that seemed to be a good idea versus the cell carriers throttled not throttled coverage.

I also though Hughes net would be cheaper which is why I actually went to look at it.

I had looked at mobile satilite internet designed to be used while the truck is moving and almost fainted from the cost. .5 mbps (Yes point 5.) was the fastest I could find and it was extremely expensive.

I haven't been able to find anyone who offers unlimited hot spot anymore which is sad. Almost wonder if its worth it to buy a grandfathered plan even if it is going to be throttled in the future.

 

No worries about it. Internet out here on the road is not the easiest at all.

That's why I have just stayed with Sprint. I don't pay for the hotspot feature on my phone, I rooted my phone so I could use the hotspot for free with the unlimited data plan Sprint has.
