Trucking demands your butt be in that cab and moving whatever the time of day or week or season. Nothing is a valid excuse for failing to roll when your schedule and appontments call for it. There is a hardware store not far from Altoona with my name on it. every morning 8 sharp, Im nosing into thier lumber yard, even in the worst of winter. I was there. Breezewood 76 learned to have a plate of breakfast and everything in a bag at 5:10 am sharp when I call them at 3 when leaving the yard. Food is paid for credit card and waiting when I pull through the fuel line. Eat on the way to bedford before doing battle on ice. You don't stop and sit. You keep moving.
We were OTR and generally planned that we get the truck first winter then set up so we do not go home until next winter about 10 months out except for very brief 10 minute halts going by.
We have done regional and local, there is some success but again, there is no set time to quit. Even in blacktop paving with a dump truck or two. You don't stop until you cannot see anymore after the sun goes down, go home get 4hours and start work again prior to the sunrise before heat of day come on. Repeat until job is completed. Parking lots take about 6 weeks for a good size one and home driveways a day to pave and a day to clean up. Not even some jobs. Others you need a week to build a road across bottom land with a trainload of gravel then another week to pave it. Some people have more money than sense. -
You are selling your drive and desire, not your experience. There is value in a solid driver that they feel they can mold....

You can make that much in fewer hours doing P&D at any LTL. I assume you don't already have your license? The dock worker route might be good if you can handle working outside in the winter.

No not yet been enrolled in a good 8 week program which will be ending soon just doing some refining in my research to find out what to do to set myself up for success

Cool. Good luck! The difficulty in finding local work right out of school is finding a company who will train you or take a chance on a newly-licensed (yet inexperienced) driver. But I know of dockworkers who have skipped all the BS and gotten a real good job in a relatively short period of time. It depends on how important staying home is to you. Unfortunately, the vast majority of training companies are OTR or Regional sleeper gigs.

In my city, an Old Dominion P&D driver can make nearly $60k working 40-hour weeks (although they usually work over 50). I know a former dockworker who got his license by doing a good job for them and showing desire to drive and now he's making great money.
street beater Thanks this. -
Od seems to be a solid company. I know a few guys that run for them here. Just remember op that local experience does not translate into otr experience and vice versa..
Bob Dobalina Thanks this. -
Thanks guys just looking for longevity for some odd reason I'm still leaning towards ups freight if I can get in as a dockworkerw/cdl with no driving experience
