I have an interview in the morning with a local outfit that hauls wood mill byproducts (chips, sawdust, bark). All local to start, but regional and into Canada if it works out.

    Stoked.

    Truckermania and Lepton1 Thank this.

PS: I actually got this interview almost immediately upon registering with a local temp svc. When I walked in, and told her I'd like to register for work, she asked what sort of work (I had previously registered at this same office for AutoCAD and SolidWorks mech design jobs).

When I said Class A CDL, her eyes got huge and I thought, for just a second there, that she was gonna kiss me.

Why going with a temp service when you can get a job on your own, without the temp service getting some of your money

Well, that really is a good question. Mostly due to my limited Class A experience, and I left one job (otr) without having another one lined up, and the bills are stacked high, and I like to be working. And, I'd really like to not go otr again, if I can avoid it.

There's advantages to working through a temp service. If you don't like the gig you can switch to another while your employer of record (the temp agency) remains the same... so your employment history won't appear unstable. And, if it's a good gig and they like how you work, you will likely be offered a regular job with that company, eventually.

Got the local gig. I also got an offer for an OTR position, the recruiter left the voicemail while I was in the interview for the local position.

    Pleasantly surprised, I am.

I know that driving aging day cabs, night shift, pulling heavy haul & dbls, of wood mill waste may not seem nearly as glamorous as an OTR job in a shiny new truck with an auto tranmy, APU's and inverters and a boat load of electronics, but I'll be here in the place that I love to call Home, with my wife and our dogs. (Working my tail off, too. Lots of hours, with runs a little ways into Canada, eventually. )

    :)

Glamour has got nothing to do with it.

You have a job that includes all of the "Three D's": Dirty, Difficult, and Dangerous. That's a step up from OTR in my book.

I agree. I never thought I could get a local job with my level of experience.

    Lepton1 Thanks this.
