i have covered placards along the thin red outline. i have been stopped numerous times at the DOT scale on I-95 in CT (at the border to NY, going north) and have never been hassled by the duct tape, along that thin red line.

Heat for the glue to loosen. (so heatgun is a good idea, steamline is better but only chemical plants have those)
Scraper to get behind the placard.
(icescraper, rasor mounted in a handle or woodchisel)

It's too bad you can't get some white placard blanks to cover those stickers with.

placards are not allowed on the vehicle, unless to convey what is inside.

do you remember the built into the trailer placard holders? and they had one that says something like "drive safe"..??

even those are NOT allowed to show anymore.

no hazmat load, NO placards of any type are to be displayed.

as mentioned, razor blade it off, done deal.

How about an air tool, such as a little grinder/polisher with a wire wheel on it?

that can be done, if the driver has an air hose. but then too, if one is driving a day cab, space is already limited. a simple razor blade. it (in his case) was only a container trailer. even on my company trailers which are white, i scrape them off. if i can get a good corner lifting from the razor blade, i can get the entire placard off with very little paint off the trailer.

at my employer, as i have said, we do not haul hazmats, but we will get an occasional rental trailer, if one of ours is in the shop.
