It wouldnt seem practical to have more than 4 chains on a coil loaded shotgun would it? gonna run out of spools/pockets to keep the chains at a good angle, unless you have J-hooks or chain pulls.

All I have to say is get a bike lock your racks to back of headache rack... I had someone about 4 months ago get up on the back of my deck " measuring them" from what he told me while was on a reset.... Least to say I lost my marbles a bit on the guy then I promptly dropped my trailer and bought lock set to prevent this type of measuring. ..

Depends on weight of coil and what your chains are rated for... my company rates the chains to what rub rail of deck is rated for 4k... so 40k coil is 10 chains or if it's 13k some off number they want us to use 4 chains at least to error on the side of caution. I want say if you run them from the frame (my company doesn't allow this...) chains rated for 6-7k and straps for 5.5k should be stamped on

    That's with 5/16 hooks

I haul coils everyday, just did two loads both 48k coils. Being in and out of mills all day long I see some really crazy things, this thread is kinda scary how some people have there own "rules" it's a coil chain it properly how the FMCSA requires plus a few extra to keep you calm in the seat and roll with it. Some of the advice on here is to say the lease scary to read, not just this thread but many others every time this subject gets brought up. .... it's kinda scary... :biggrin_2552:

I picked up at one place in Indiana, got a 40k coil.

Guy next to me got a 30k coil, threw two 4" straps over the top and started tarping it. I asked him if he was going to use chains, said "He doesn't carry any chains"

    Cetane+ Thanks this.

I'm on my second load today....my first one was 2 coils 81,500 this one is light at 76k.....I only carry 8 chains on my truck and 4 4" straps and a TOTAL of 6 racks (every now and then I like to get frisky and put 3 on).....I'm guessing some of you would have a heart attack for lack of securement....like I said whatever makes you feel safe go for it

    Wow Just Wow
It seems like most of the Drivers have not read the "green book". It has a section that tells you the DOT standard for coils and it is not "what ever you feel safe with". I find it strange that a flatbed O/O has never hauled a coil. What do they haul?? Here is a news flash for you metal pays better than most other freight.
Many shippers have rules as far as coil boards, rubber mats, brown paper, no snap binders most do not want to see the angle coil racks. I attempt to carry everything needed to secure any load I have ever hauled. I find it hard to believe that some Drivers have such a limited amount of equipment on the truck?
    My normal load out
    10 3/8 chains
    14 3 in straps
    14 4 in straps
    6 2 in straps
    12 3/8 binders
    16 rubber mats
    10 coil boards
    20 coil racks
    20 metal edge pro
    20 plastic edge pro
    6 8 ft 4x4
and a ton of felt pads and soft edge pro
