I realize that it's our jobs to get the best rate for every load we haul but does every call with a broker have to be a negotiation? I mean, do you negotiate with shippers when you haul for them directly? And if someone tells you that the rate is firm, why bother trying to convince them to give you more money? I simply thank them for their time and move on if what they're offering doesn't seem fair to haul the load?

And am i the only one who actually reads the postings on boards like DAT? When the lane, weight, commodity, shipping/receiving hours, and rate are posted, why would you you waste your time calling on the load to being with if you don't like what you see? Word to the wise. Always read the posting before calling.

Many of us only use the load board as a last resort. I have brokers calling me with offers all the time. I mostly work with just one agent, who pre-plans me out 2-3 legs in advance. And yes, I do negotiate. He knows the rate that I need to move the truck, and he makes it work when he needs something moved. If I know a particular lane is paying more than he's offering, I'll call him out on it and he finds a way to add something to the trip. :)

Why not negotiate? You are leaving money on the table. Do you really think someone is going to put their best offer forward right out of the gate? Some may but normally only if it pays crappy to begin with so they go straight to their highest after hearing no 10 times in a row. Remember every extra dollar you get goes right to your bottom line.

Negotiations with shippers is different. It’s more of a dance then a back in forth.

As far as reading the actual postings, totally agree!

    If the shoe fits...

I post my truck at times with specific information in the notes section.

Never fails I'll receive a call or two from some broker asking if I can do a load that I had clearly defined in the notes I couldn't do.

You know, like load at 0700 when I posted I'd be available around 1000. Ask me if I'd be interested in doing a load to New York when the parameters I listed destination city as Portland, etc.

@DUNE-T and @Humblepie I hope your filtered comment is referring to the poser, but it's ok if you are referring to me. I wear that shoe from time to time.
