I'm having a problem with no clearance on the front camshaft support that goes into the front cover. I'm wondering if the shop that did the engine forgot to put the thrust washer in. It is very difficult to see behind the gear but from what I can see with my light and my mirror it doesn't look like it's there.
Does anyone know the approximate thickness of the camshaft thrust washer for a big cam cummins?

The thrust washer between the Cam gear and the block is roughly 1/16th”. The outer cam support cap is shimmed out to provide the clearance needed. To set it, remove all the shims install the cap. And use feeler gauges to determine how many need to be added to set it.
You’ll have to remove the air compressor and use a mirror or camera to see the thrust washer between the block and gear.snowman_w900, spsauerland and Dino soar Thank this. -

Thank you. That is exactly what I needed to know.
The problem that I'm having is that when I put the bearing support into the front cover it actually hits the front cover instead of hitting the camshaft. So basically what I'm saying is that it's like the camshaft gear is too close to the block.
My measurements could be slightly off maybe by a few thousandths, but my figure was that if the camshaft gear moved .050 toward the cover the support would touch the camshaft and touch the front cover with no space.
So 1/16 of an inch equals .0625. So subtract .050 and there is roughly twelve or thirteen thousandths to have a gap now to measure and shim. Roughly. That sounds like that would be correct.
Right now I have the oil pump out and the front cover off and I can see behind the gear not perfectly but I can see behind it and I don't think there is any thrust washer there.
I hope they did not miss anything else on that engine... -
Unless there’s wear on your cam cap??
If your careful, you could bar out (or slide out) the cam and gear up to up to 1/4” safely. ( i’m sure the cam lobes and Followers are at least 1/2” wide) With out the cam followers dropping behind any lobes. But I would only do it if it helps to look behind the gear for the thrust washer. It’s been awhile and I can’t remeber if it would help look around the gear housing. -
I did slide it out as far as I could get it and I don't see a thrust washer behind there. I'm going to check again tomorrow, but I didn't see anything behind there.
I'm going to start another Thread about removing the camshaft, if you're available let me know if you have any ideas @Working2party .Last edited: Dec 29, 2018

I’ve got an old Motor’s manual that covers the big cams at the shop. I replaced the cam in my Brothers 444 last year. I’ll try to get the book close to me for the next few days. The worst part of the job is stripping the left side of the block...
