They all break they all have Junk. I have seen million mile Acerts and 100 mile Acerts. Same with Big Cams and the rest. It's all in how it's treated and who built it. B model CATS been good to me thats where I will stay
Aftermarket inframe kit for a mechanical CAT comparable to a BIg Cam only a few hundred more in the link below. caterpillar-engine-inframe-kit-3406c
Yes larger journal on the rods I know, and the steel topped piston makes it durable for bigger horsepower. Both good engines.
While we have all the big cam aficionados subscribed to this thread, I have a question that I wonder if anyone can answer. Is it possible to take an n14 and time it to whatever CPL that you would like, and put a PT pump on it and mechanical injectors and convert it to a mechanical engine? Just curious if that's possible and what would be needed to do that.
Have no personal experience in this, but a man I have ran with says they are in the process of this very thing. Using a early model electronic N14 if my memory is correct. Steel top Pistons and bigger journals would be a plus for a mechanical.
I have seen a running model of what your talking about. Did not see it working tbough so I can't say how well it worked
I don't know if I could find the actual mechanical engine. I think they were only made for one or two years. But I've come across quite a few of the electronic engines in trucks I came close to buying. They've been around long enough now that you can get a really good deal on one of them and there are so many of them around. Now that I'm thinking about it, you would have to see if the camshaft in the electronic n14 has the same lift as the mechanical n14 or is the same as a big cam. If the mechanical and the electronic have the same lift I suppose you could just set the timing to the mechanical specs. Or you would have to play with the timing or just change the camshaft and set the timing to that CPL. I'm always interested in things like that.
