That is about what the 84's did for the company I worked with at the time did. The 87's averaged around 6.2 for the year. Those were 350's, direct 9's, 355's with LP 22.5.s Both of these had some computer poop on them, E Tech? limited to 58 MPH.The 400's with no poop and 9 overs averaged 7+. All of those were running in the same fleet at the same time pulling tanks.

Hmm.... thought the BC 1 was golden.... no variable timing, etc. The one I had/still have(parked) cpl is 369. Higher flow injectors(top stops backed off) 300 psi fuel pump, HTC 4 turbo. Was fun to drive for that time. 6.5 mpg all day long.Dogman22 and BoxCarKidd Thank this.
-
is it norm that i get heavy white smoke until like 5 mins of driving.OLDSKOOLERnWV Thanks this.
-
Please over look me opening my mouth to much. I thank Big Cams with fixed timing and lower press fit liners were the peak of them. Sounds like you had a good one!Diesel Dave Thanks this.

How long of time and how many miles have you been driving this truck?
-
365, 400, 475 horse engines used lower compression pistons...... So smoke at idle is normal.
Stock injectors for a 400 with CPL 625 is 176 injectors if memory is right. I'm running 220 injectors with a bigger pump and a HT60 turbo from a 525 horse N14.
If your engine is a 400..... And you want yo use stock original Cummins parts, get a set of injectors for CPL 310, that will take your injectors from 176 to 190 with factory parts. CPL 625 & 531 both are good numbers to have your pump built to. CPL 625 + 30% with those 190 injectors will be plenty to notice a big difference in it. I advise a pyrometer anytime you start adding fuel, may not need it but it's nice if you do
.

Mr OLDSKOOLERnWV: Thanks for all those numbers. I asked Dogman that question because the 400's I worked with in the late 80's smoked a lot when cold. It was normal at start up and they were new.
Is that HT60 a little slow to spool up or it rocks right on with the upgrades?Dogman22, wore out, Brettj3876 and 2 others Thank this. -
Your welcome, just hope there is something in my rambling that can help someone lol.
It's decent but I've seen some build boost faster.
Another little cheap upgrade is running a dual fuel line setup, even my died in the wool Cat buddies complement how smooth my engine is. If you notice a N14, it has a dual fuel line setup from the factory.
Although it's biggest participation is helping to keep the EGT's down, I'm running a N14 air to air as well on my Big Cam.BoxCarKidd, Brettj3876 and Diesel Dave Thank this. -
@OLDSKOOLERnWV knows his stuff listen to him. My dad had a cpl 838 315ph bc4 that was "tweaked" before he bought it. 3.55s and a 9 speed direct got 6.5 mpg w/o even trying. He pissed off more than a few kitty guys lol. 250-300k between bearing rolls. Simple simple engines. Love how they sound and smelll
Diesel Dave Thanks this. -
In the late 70's Cabover I ran. I got 6.7 to 7 MPG out of it. But back then all roads were 55. Even Interstates had 55 MPH limits. Company made us run 55. Or they tried to
, We never were close to gross weight. Most times gross weight was 65,000 or so. That Cabover I had a love hate relationship for. I loved to hate it for sure. Springs all around and beat you to death.
OLDSKOOLERnWV and Dogman22 Thank this.
