I work for a construction company so I haul more than just equipment, I carry a couple 1/2 chains but mostly 3/8. I'm not using 1/2 inch chains on mini excavators, Bobcats, and D3's. I can't imagine trying to throw a 20' 1/2 chain over a trench box with 5' spreaders in it, I'm not man enough for that. I can put enough 3/8 chains on to do the job. Now on my super trailer I carry all 1/2 inch chains but all it hauls is big excavators.

5' spreaders and 7' tall I hear not throwing a 1/2" over that. We used 3/8 as well.

I work for a const co. too. biggest thing they got is a 336D. I use a lot of short chains, 1/2" bout 2 ' long for excavators (4), I cut the 3/8 & 5/16 20's to 13' & 7' & add hooks then paint the hooks different colors to tell them apart. Keep a few 20's for trench boxes etc. Once you get to know your own equip. that you haul everyday, chaining gets a little different. 37 years on a lowbed, never lost anything. (that I know of.....lol)

Why across the states instead of crossing int BC then AB?? Still gotta run pilots and the mountains aren't much worse but ar least you could run it after dark.

One of our drivers hauled a HD41 from New Mexico to Montana and actually routed through Utah because of the cost of the Wyoming permits. Could be the factor here also. I know the Montana permit is cheap.

We have several bigger excavators ,but I still just use 3/8 chains on them except the two 750's we haul them on a super trailer which I use 1/2 on. I'm with you on the short chains I carry several, a couple years ago I made four three footers with grab hooks on one end and big slip hooks on the other, I don't know how I ever lived without them. I'm thinking about making a 1/2 set just like them, it would save me throwing some extra chains some days.

Bc I would have been a midnight to 5am move. Surprisingly Montana and Idaho I don't need pilots for. I found that kind of odd. Going down the 90 to the 15 then north

It's been awhile since I was that wide in ID and MT but now that I think about it I didn't need pilots which is awesome. Have fun with the new scenery it's actually a really pretty ride until you get into the plains up by great falls, then it just looks like southern AB all the way to Medicine Hat.

Cnsper I totally understand the WY permit thing. I fight that all the time.
