Bigger exhaust stacks? Why..

That....is the stuff I roll my eyes at.
It serves no purpose but to draw attention.
I run my muffled Jake's in towns with noise restrictions, and I never get hassled. I've personally seen a dozen or so others ticketed for running unmuffled jakes.
Maybe I'm just getting old.

 

I am getting there, a straight piped cummins is pretty much unbearable, my cat is starting to get loud by the time I get to the bottom of some of the long runs.

 

The Bigger the Exhaust, the Smaller the Driver's Appendage....

 

Question of the day. What kind of man goes through life worried about the appendage size of other males?

Is it because he himself is insecure or a deeper interest?
Whatever floats his boat makes no #### to me.


Kinda like how someone else spends money that belongs to em its theirs so it falls in the doesn't matter to me category.

 

In 68 my dad had an international with the 318 Detroit decided to put Straight on it made one trip came home DEF put the mufflers right back on !!!!
Of course those were only 4 inch stacks !
Heard of 475 Detroit one time with straights sure sounded sweet but man was it loud !!!

 

Last I heard the guy using that as a measuring stick usually has a real small one.

turbos work from the exhaust of the engine to spin the turbine and the turbine on the other side of the turbo compresses the air going into engine, allowing more power to be produced

i raced turbocharged cars back in the day and the less restrictive the exhaust, the more power is possible however a point of diminishing returns is reached, so sizing the exhaust to work with the other components is crucial. i ran a street car with a muffler and an exhaust cutout so i could open the exhaust and bypass the muffler at the track. i ran different fuel, higher boost, and different air/fuel ratio in that case


there are probably other factors specific to big rigs that I am unaware of since we are revving lower and pulling loads

The only thing you need is a manifold, or header to keep the cold air from immediately getting to the hot exhaust valves which can crack them. Back pressure is the enemy of horsepower which has been dubunked in many dyno tests.
