Biggest Health Challenges

    What are your biggest challenges to staying healthy on the road? Obviously it's not a career that makes it easy, but what specific roadblocks have you hit? Have you tried any diets out there and had success/failed?

    When home(weekends and maybe 1-2 times during the week) I weight train regularly. When on the road, at the end of my day I try to walk at least 2 miles…..Some days i don't end the day until late….and i may not park somewhere where its convenient to walk or run.

    Food is another….sometimes i think its ok to eat mcdonalds or something, but, then it just compiles into well i ate it once…another time won't hurt….. I would say food is the biggest issue...

    i do local work 12 hour shifts. last winter after i passed my physical and got a 2 year medical card i started jogging at the airport. i was out there in the dark . at first i could only go 1/4 mile but i always continued walking til i got 20 minutes.
    i last fall it started getting cold and dark so i joined anytime fitness and continued jogging on their treadmill.
    i set it at 6.3 mph and go for 1.5 miles. then walk til i got 20 minutes.
    some of my co workers are in their late twenties and thirties and say they will not be able to pass another physical and are doing nothing about it.
    its a wonderful feeling to be 57 years old with no fat and once you get past a mile and no heart attack you can just keep going

    There are other threads about this topic. Certainly it's a challenge and it's going to depend on your motivation, whether you are home every night or OTR.
    If you have ever read any of my posts, you will know I've got definite opinions and knowledge about nutrition. Sometimes I cringe at what drivers eat while on the road. What I do is a long story and it's taken some time to set up. I tweak what I do from time to time, but it works for me.
    If you don't care about what you eat, or you like to be overweight, then just go and continue what you are doing.....fast/junk food, lots of sugar, zero exercise, sugary sodas, the list goes on.
    That's why we have record numbers of obesity and type 2 diabetes in this country and it's only going to get worse.
    If you are motivated, then you have to get educated and stop the rot. Diets don't work, you have to change the way you eat forever.
    There are NO excuses, only solutions and IMHO to be fair we are up against a very corrupt food industry who only cares about max profit for their members at the expense of us, the gullible public.
    And don't expect any help from our fearless leaders in DC. If anything they are in collusion with the food industry and all the others who contribute to this perverse state some of us are in. I laugh at the so called Govt guidelines/food pyramid on how you should eat. It's bogus and is NOT based on good health ideas at all, but was consummated as a result of corrupt aggressive lobbying by the food industry. The result is for all to see.
    It's taken me many hours/days of research to come up with my ideas and outcomes.
    Personally I don't hold much hope for most of the guys in trucking. Sugar/Carb addiction has taken it's toll and it's very hard for drivers to kick the habit.
    You only have to go into any truckstop to see that most truckers are overweight.

    dr fandango is 100% correct.
    with the new controls on medical cards they are weeding out fat diabetic truck drivers at a rapid pace. their are no openings in night dispatch for the disqualified drivers are there.
    if your not lumping freight all day low carb is for those in it for the long haul.
    the only thing i take from the convenience store is water coffee.small package of nuts and sometimes beef jerky.

    Of course what drivers eat on a daily basis causes health concerns.Many eat that greasy over or undercooked stuff trkstops call food.Then not getting the adeguate amount of sleep is an issue which causes drivers to get something to go not really caring what it is as long as its edible..There is going to always be health issues in trucking and there is nothing nobody can do about it and nobody should do anything about it.Its there body there life let them be.They know the heatlh issues and risk.The Government should leave them alone and worry about others in a different line of work.

    Look at photos of truckers in the 60's and 70's they were not huge, most were in modest shape.... fast forward to now and many are huge

    I see a similar issue when comparing society today vs when my grandpa was my age. He didn't work out everyday or go on a bunch of fad diets. Societal norms have really changed about weight, and all the fast food and processed crap definitely doesn't help.

    Whether you struggle with this, or know someone who does, what prevents you from making a change?

    Opinions are all over the place as to what to do and how to keep your weight in check.
    I'm just not going to take any notice of Govt guidelines, media "advice" Fad diets and IMHO Doctors in general are clueless about nutrition. That's not their
    purpose in life when they go to med school.
    But they sure like to hand out meds like candy. That's their solution.
    WE can't afford to be out of shape and in poor health. Those clowns at the FMCSA are out of control too and have an agenda we all know about.
    Unfortunately what works for me may be a struggle for others.
    It hasn't been easy, and it's taken a great deal of reading and trial and error to find what works.
    But what is clear is that we as a nation eat waaaaay to much sugar, carbs and processed foods. If you look at the stats the past 30 yrs, it's staggering how obesity and type 2 diabetes has increased and is now out of control, Scary stuff.
    And boy, is it difficult to kick this perverse habit of sugar addiction.
    The guys have to start reading, and figure out what to do.
    Obesity and diabetes has contributed to other illnesses and diseases so that's why we spend huge amounts of $$$ on healthcare.
