When you guys take on a new direct customer, do you make them pay up front for the first few loads, or do you extend them credit from the beginning?
I was also thinking about getting a card reader or Apple Pay for new customers that want something moved locally/75 mile range. So they can pay up front with a card (...?) -
My rule of thumb is, if they are a sizable well known company, I'll let them by on net 30 days. If it's a small startup or "hole in the wall" place, it will be COD. I've lost some jobs by requiring COD but the risk of not getting paid is too great.
It's not a bad idea to get setup to take credit cards. Don't use it on people that you extend credit to, just use CC on people you are unsure about, as the CC company charges a fee. -
I'd not be afraid to ask for Net10 either.

I just received a check today for a load I delivered 11/8, invoiced 11/10, check was supposedly written 12/7, postmarked 12/28, arrived 1/4...LOL!
misterG and HopeOverMope Thank this. -
I’ve noticed that Landstar is about 40 days out unless I negotiate a better rate then it’s 60 days. I’ve only hauled about 50 loads for them since’09 but the pattern seems to be better rate/longer wait. BTW, recently I hauled 2 loads for the same agent. First one, I agreed on posted rate (35 days). Second one, negotiated better rate........(68 days)!
DSK333 and HopeOverMope Thank this. -
I use a laptop with quickbooks and the scanning software that came with my printer. I can tether the cell phone to the laptop or printer. (Sometimes I print directly from the phone). I have pretty much the same procedures as others have listed. With adobe, i can sign and initial contracts and ratecons and never print a thing. Sure saves a lot of space in the truck, not having all that paper clutter. And it really speeds up the turnaround time on the paperwork.
HopeOverMope Thanks this.
