its true but a black dog is a reference. Drivers exspeacially years ago have seen all sorts of things. I've seen a deer stand on hind legs waiving. I've nown drivers wake up in middle of road cause they swore herds of cattle was crossing in front of them. Not the first cow was spotted. Its true when running to hard pushing to the max ur mind is actually in acoma state. U see stuff u would never think possible. Like driving down a road with lite colored pavement and all the sudden it goes to darker shade and u swear ur running something over. Or u pull behind another truck with his parking lights on in a rest area ,lay ur head over steering wheel wake up an hour later putting brake pedal thru floor board cause u think ur fixin to run him over. Tired mind does crazy stuff.

there are some things you swear you'll never claim to see, but when you push your body and mind beyond recovery,,,you will know what you saw. the black dog id a reference to alot of unexplained things. like the little man on I-40 eb in arizona that rides on your passenger door tapping for you to let him in,,,,the story is if ya do you die. or get in on hell of a wreck. the girl with the blonde hair on I-24 in tenn. looking for the trucker that ran her over back in the late 70's. the white deer that stands in the roadway about 50ft in front of your truck on I-80 outside of raawling,wy. just long enough for you to hit the brakes then its gone. things like this are what some drivers have seen. but wont admit too. the black dog is said to come to you in many forms, or colors,,,,but yes its true

When you have run to hard and you are completely wiped out then you would be shocked at the things you will see.
Things i have seen...
#1. A purple elephant with pick dots.
#2. The Devil running beside my truck while running 80MPH across SD.
#3. A cowboy riding along side of me on the interstate.
#4. Cars crossing in front of me while driving down an empty highway.Talk about scaring the hell out of you!
#5. All kinds of ghosts and such looking into the window while driving down the road.
I always pulled off and went to bed after seeing this stuff but i stopped running that hard a long time ago. -
i have had a few jobs where my dispatch had me running a few log books, in doing this it allowed me to run longer than legal, i never took pills to stay awake and energy drinks just dont work with me, i have seen buildings just appear out of the darkness in the middle of the road, as well as people walking across the street and vehicles and random animals, i never have seen the black dog, but the basis on the myth in my opinion are true, lack of sleep, and the fact that you can be on an open road in the middle of no where on a long stretch can really start to mess with your mind and body.

I remember seeing that movie, then having friends & family ask me if i'd "seen the black dog". It got to the point were i had to threaten people with strangulation if they asked me that stupid question again.

I believe the idea of a "black dog" is more a euphemism for "being so tired you see stuff" and possibly having it spook you, which does indeed happen. In the movie, he saw a dog and ended up swerving into someone parked on the side of the road.
I call it "driving blind", which is what happens when you don't remember the last 100 miles you just drove. And the day it happens to you, you have some choices to make about your driving habits. Driving blind is how that Knight driver scattered that body all over KS back in '07. -
There are man legends of black dogs for centuries, as both demonic and as guardians. Look here for a start:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_dog_(ghost)
I am not a trucker, however, I just saw a remarkable series of photographs called "Seeing the Black Dog" by Michael Massaia. His work can be seen at:
http://www.michaelmassaiaphotography.com/
These photos are huge and exquisitely beautiful. If you love trucks, this is it. I came to this site searching the truckers legend of The Black Dog. I was already familiar with other legends, but when I came upon this tread I wanted to share the other legends and the photography of Massaia. I have no personal interest in this other than being excited over the work itself. I joined to share. Hope you enjoy.
